Plan to complete smart drone platform integration

Drone-specific battery charging stations will be built all over the country, and drones will be able to go anywhere with free battery charging, just like electric vehicles.

LG Uplus announced on the 12th that it signed a 'MOU for expanding smart drone business' with Japan's KDDI and Taiwan's CIRC (Coretronic Intelligent Robotics Corporation).

The three companies expect that this collaboration will enable the expansion of the smart drone platform.

The smart drone platform relays photos and videos taken by cameras installed on drones to terminals such as smartphones and control centers via LTE/5G communications. In addition, drone status information, flight plans, flight paths, and mission execution can be remotely and comprehensively managed via LTE/5G communications.

CIRC has commercialized lightweight drones and drone stations weighing 6 to 8 kg. The 'drone station' manufactured by CIRC is a device that can automatically charge a drone's battery at a desired location. The drone station not only increases the usability of drones by enabling long-term flights even with low-cost, lightweight aircraft, but also reduces the cost burden of introducing drones.

The three companies plan to complete the linkage of drone bodies and stations with smart drone platforms by the end of this year, and explore various business opportunities starting next year along with verification. It is expected that the use of drones will expand to ▲rapid on-site confirmation in the event of disasters such as large-scale fires and earthquakes, and ▲control services for facility management such as large-scale industrial complexes.

Meanwhile, LG Uplus and KDDI agreed to jointly develop a smart drone platform at the 'KDDI 5G SUMMIT 2019' held in Tokyo in June last year.

The two companies are cooperating on the following: △joint use of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) for drone automatic control, △promoting commonization of interfaces between the drone system traffic management system (UTM) and the air traffic management system (ATM), △joint development of drone peripherals for safe flight, and △commonization of modules and boards for LTE and 5G communication linkage.
