"Developers Need to Understand 5G Networks… Management Considerations Must Be Considered"

[Editor's Note] The number of 5G subscribers is steadily increasing, and it is expected that 75% of the world's population will be included in 5G network coverage by 2027. A 5G-specific network (5G-specific network) is a communication network that utilizes 5G frequencies in specific areas so that general companies, not mobile carriers, can implement their own networks. As the introduction of 5G-specific networks brings about changes centered on manufacturing and logistics, Ericsson-LG is entering the 5G-specific network equipment market. We met with Ericsson-LG Team Leader Kang Ji-hoon to learn about Ericsson-LG's solutions for developing 5G applications and services.

■ The most important thing developers should consider when building a 5G-specific network for a smart factory is

It is important to understand and leverage the 5G capabilities as a programmable network.

Smart factories can configure four characteristics of Massive IoT, Broadband IoT, Critical IoT, and Industrial IoT into a single 5G network, and this characteristic is called 'One Programmable network'.

Developers need to consider how to use and manage 5G network features that require various requirements. To do this, they need to understand the various API environments and OSS environments provided by 5G networks.

■ The solution proposed by Ericsson to configure a network environment optimized for various coverage areas is

Ericsson has gained several key insights from its decades of experience as a managed service provider and many years of 5G enterprise industry application projects. Based on this, we launched a package product for enterprise use.

'EP5G (Ericsson Private 5G)' provides functions that allow enterprise IT managers to easily install, operate, and manage without specialized 5G-related expertise.

It provides the ability to manage networks and develop services through open APIs (application programming interfaces) even if you are not familiar with communication terminology or do not know the structure of the communication network.

■ What differentiates Ericsson-LG’s equipment from other companies?

EP5G is a fully automated, pre-packaged industrial product that is simple to implement and can be installed in less than an hour. It predefines various required QoS (Quality of Service) requirements used in enterprise environments and can be implemented simply through APIs.

In addition, complex RAN/CORE parameter management and service quality monitoring have been automated as a cloud-based consignment management service, dramatically reducing the burden and costs on enterprise users.

This product has been used in the US and European markets for a long time, providing great convenience to domestic companies with global factories.

Additionally, additional benefits can be achieved by linking with global services owned by Ericsson, such as Vonage and IoT Accelerator.

■ Domestic and international If you have any application examples to introduce,

There is an example of Profinet being applied to collaborative robots based on 5G at an Audi factory.

This is an example of implementing an industrial protocol on a 5G network and PoC it with ultra-low latency. Although it has not been officially launched in Korea yet, it is expected to be officially introduced in the near future.

There are also cases where work efficiency was improved based on a 5G specialized network in a logistics warehouse, and cases where high-speed transmission of rides in an amusement park was provided in real time so that those who cannot ride the rides could enjoy them together.

■ If you look at the 5G specialized network industry this year,

In order to implement URLLC, a session that simultaneously secures ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability, which is one of the characteristics of 5G, it is judged that specialized networks will be more advantageous than commercial networks.

In particular, many companies considering autonomous robot services, such as factories or logistics warehouses, are actively pursuing the establishment of specialized networks.

It is expected that many companies will introduce pilot services for this in 2023, and that the specialized network market will grow actively from 2024-25.

In addition, as the demand for specialized networks in the cultural market sector is steadily increasing, we believe this is the most appropriate time to enter the 5G specialized network market this year.

■ Please briefly introduce the content to be announced at the '2023 IIoT Innovation Day' held by e4ds news.

The topics to be presented this time will be in the industrial field, specifically industrial protocols and 5G networks.
/> It does not simply cover the verification of service quality, but also discusses what those in charge of implementing and operating these services in a real environment need to know.

※ e4ds news will host the ' 2023 IIoT Innovation Day' on March 10th (Fri) in Grand Ballroom 103 on the 1st floor of the COEX Conference Room (North). This event will provide an opportunity to look into the latest smart factory and smart manufacturing industry trends and prospects, industrial application development cases using 5G in manufacturing sites, and the 5G specialized network ecosystem and construction plans.
