Development of autonomous steering and ultra-precision treatment platforms pursued as a 22.8 billion won national project
Mediintech, a technology-based startup of the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI), has embarked on the development of an AI-based next-generation robotic endoscope platform in collaboration with Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul National University, DGIST, and KERI. This project aims to localize intelligent medical devices that support both diagnosis and treatment while reducing the limitations of manual operation of flexible endoscopes.

Mediintech announced on the 8th that it has been selected for the project "Development of a Next-Generation Intelligent Robotic Endoscope Platform Applying AI-Based Autonomous Steering and Ultra-Precision Treatment Procedure Automation Technology," in collaboration with KERI, Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul National University, and Daegu Gyeongbuk Science and Technology Institute (DGIST). The project will run from April 2026 to December 2031, with a total research budget of 22.8 billion won.

Flexible electronic endoscopes are essential medical devices for diagnosing digestive diseases such as stomach and colorectal cancer. However, the global market is dominated by Japanese companies, including Olympus, Fujifilm, and Pentax. In Korea, there has also been a persistent need to localize high-value-added medical devices and secure next-generation endoscope technology.

This project focuses on reducing the limitations of manual operation of existing endoscopes. The research team plans to develop autonomous steering technology in which AI analyzes the curved structure inside the digestive tract to assist or automatically control the entry direction of the endoscope. The goal is to reduce the operational burden on medical staff during the examination process and minimize variations caused by skill levels.

The scope of development extends beyond diagnostic endoscopes to the therapeutic realm. The consortium is also developing robotics technology that integrates ultra-small multi-joint surgical instruments with endoscopes to support high-difficulty procedures such as lesion grasping, traction, incision, and suturing. Expansion into specialized endoscope fields, including duodenoscopes and miniature cholangioscopes, as well as upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopes, is also being considered.

Roles were also divided among the institutions. Mediintech oversees the development of an intelligent electric robotic endoscope platform, while Seoul National University Hospital is responsible for clinical validation. Seoul National University develops AI algorithms for diagnostic and surgical assistance, and KERI is in charge of optical and image processing technologies for spectroscopic imaging. DGIST is responsible for developing core technologies for the robotic endoscope.

If this research proceeds as planned, the domestic medical device industry is expected to expand its foundation for technological self-reliance in the field of flexible endoscopes, which currently has a high dependence on imports. In particular, the endoscope platform combining AI and robotic technology is drawing attention for its potential application in clinical settings, in terms of improving examination efficiency, alleviating patient burden, and supporting precision treatment.
