SK On· Korea Automobile Diagnostic Warranty Association Business Agreement… Leading the Standardization of Diagnostic Evaluation

SK On is leading the standardization by joining hands with a professional association to create standards for evaluating the performance and residual value of used electric vehicle batteries.

SK On announced on the 28th that it signed a 'business agreement for establishing EV battery status diagnosis and value assessment standards' with the Korea Automobile Diagnostic Warranty Association (hereinafter referred to as the Diagnostic Warranty Association) at the SK Seorin building in Jongno-gu, Seoul.

The plan is to accurately measure the life and condition of batteries, which account for about 40% of the price of electric vehicles, to provide consumers with accurate information and to improve residual value assessment technology for the virtuous cycle of battery resources.

The event was attended by SK On's e-mobility division head Jung Woo-sung and Korea Diagnostic Assurance Association chairman Jung Wook.

The Korea Automobile Diagnostic Warranty Association is an organization under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport established for the purpose of protecting consumers by checking the performance status and assessing the price of used automobiles.

The two sides agreed to jointly establish performance diagnosis methods and evaluation criteria for calculating the residual value of electric vehicle batteries in the future. It is expected that the agreement will revitalize the used electric vehicle market and increase market transparency by properly assessing value.

To this end, SK On will provide the association with advice on battery performance measurement and diagnosis based on its self-developed artificial intelligence algorithm, ‘BaaS AI’, to diagnose battery conditions. It also plans to actively utilize the vast amount of data and analysis capabilities accumulated through collaboration with electric vehicle-related companies.

SK On is already collaborating on battery diagnosis with used car dealers K-Car, Autohub Cellcar, rental car company SK Rent-a-Car, and electric vehicle charging platform EV Infra.

SK On is also developing technology that can measure battery life for use by used car dealers starting in the second half of this year. This is considered optimal for the used car trading environment as it allows for quick and accurate confirmation of remaining life.

The background to the business agreement between SK On and the association is that while the electric vehicle market is rapidly growing, there is still a lack of credible evaluation standards for electric vehicle batteries.

The current used car performance status inspection standards are centered on internal combustion engines. This means that the existing inspection standards are not suitable for evaluating used electric vehicles.

This collaboration aims to complete standards for diagnosing and valuing electric vehicles. In the future, the association plans to distribute dedicated diagnostic equipment for electric vehicles and establish performance status inspection standards for electric vehicles in general, and propose institutional improvements to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Jung Woo-sung, head of the SK On business division, said, “Performance diagnosis and residual value evaluation are the starting point of battery resource circulation,” and added, “We will continue to develop various businesses that can take care of both the environment and consumer convenience in the future.”
