Securing human and material infrastructure and utilizing mutual resources
Hanwha Systems and Jeju National University are working together to foster talent for the advancement of the Jeju region's space industry and to spur the commercialization of UAM.
Hanwha Systems announced on the 22nd that it signed an MOU with Jeju National University for 'joint research and development cooperation in the space and UAM fields and fostering specialized talents in the Jeju region.'
Hanwha Systems and Jeju National University will promote: △industry-academia cooperation in the space industry and securing human and material infrastructure and utilizing mutual resources; △joint research and development and collaboration in the space and UAM fields to foster excellent talent; and △joint research and business development for Jeju-type UAM commercial services.
Hanwha Systems claimed that it is building capabilities across the entire satellite development sector, from electro-optical (EO), infrared (IR), and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) payloads for artificial satellites to ultra-small satellite systems, and is working to create a space industry ecosystem.
In addition, the company formed the 'K-UAM Dream Team' consortium with SKT, Korea Airports Corporation, Hanwha Systems, and T Map Mobility to promote Korea's first UAM commercialization service in Jeju Island in 2025. Hanwha Systems is responsible for aircraft development, manufacturing, sales, operation, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and development of air traffic control solutions.
Hanwha Systems said, "Jeju Island will be able to conduct stable UAM pilot operations using existing navigation and safety infrastructure, which will allow for rapid activation of the UAM ecosystem."
Eosungcheol Oh, CEO of Hanwha Systems, said, “Hanwha Systems aims to contribute to the industry-academia program that will lead the competitiveness of the nation and Jeju region, and to the cultivation of specialized talents that will lead the space industry and future mobility paradigm,” adding, “We expect that through industry-academia cooperation with Jeju National University, we will be able to create great synergy in joint research in the space field and commercialization of UAM in the Jeju region.”
Jeju National University President Kim Il-hwan said, “We will build a successful industry-academia innovation model with Hanwha Systems and foster ‘new business specialized talents’ in the next-generation space development field and Jeju-style UAM service.”
