ETRI, Development of Heterogeneous V2X-Based Autonomous Cooperative Driving Technology

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) is developing autonomous cooperative driving technology that connects vehicles, infrastructure, and pedestrians in real time, and it is expected that this will usher in a future era of transportation in which all vehicles on the road will communicate.

ETRI recently announced that it is developing cutting-edge technology that enables real-time communication between vehicles as well as cooperation with road infrastructure and mobile communication networks.

When this technology is applied, it is expected that not only autonomous vehicles but also general vehicles and pedestrians will be included in road safety services, thereby overcoming the limitations of the existing transportation system and dramatically improving efficiency and safety.

ETRI plans to develop three autonomous cooperative driving services: cooperative driving, cooperative recognition, and remote control based on technology that can connect various transportation elements.

Cooperative driving creates a safer driving environment through real-time connections between vehicles (V2V), vehicles and road infrastructure (V2I), vehicles and pedestrians (V2P), and vehicles and networks (V2N).

Cooperative Cognition analyzes traffic conditions in real time, detects the movements of pedestrians or vehicles at risk of accidents, and quickly shares information with surrounding vehicles.

Remote control provides the ability to observe vehicles and pedestrians in real time and issue warnings or adjust movements for safety when necessary.Do it.

The system being developed by ETRI is designed to connect various devices, such as vehicles, traffic lights, CCTVs, and smartphones, to share data in real time.

This allows for the immediate detection of a risk of accident around an intersection, which can immediately send a warning to surrounding vehicles and pedestrians to prevent accidents in advance. This is the implementation of a 'cooperative traffic system' that is one step ahead of existing autonomous vehicle-centered technology.

This technology is designed to operate stably in various network environments such as 5G, LTE, and Wi-Fi, and we plan to additionally develop network optimization technology using AI and intelligent edge server functions by considering factors such as vehicle movement speed, communication delay time, and video quality.

ETRI expects that this technology will expand into various public services such as not only preventing traffic accidents but also relieving urban traffic congestion and providing priority passage for emergency vehicles.

The areas where it can be applied in the future are expected to include: △highway platooning, △smart city traffic control, and △elderly protection systems.

This research is being conducted with the support of the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Institute of Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP), and the Autonomous Driving Technology Development Innovation Fund (KADIF), and will be hosted by ETRI until the end of 2027, with joint research institutes including the Korea Electronics Technology Institute, Sesoltech, Etiforce, the Korea Information and Communications Technology Association, and Ajou University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation participating.

In addition, major companies such as Daejeon Metropolitan City, LG Electronics, and Kakao Mobility will cooperate for service verification and commercialization, and plan to establish a foundation for technology commercialization through verification with domestic telecommunications and autonomous driving solution companies.
