Growth prospects for core infrastructure encompassing autonomous vehicles and unmanned mobility
Etipos, a South Korean vehicle-to-object communication (V2X) technology company, is accelerating its efforts to penetrate the North American next-generation toll payment market.
Etipos recently announced that it successfully demonstrated V2X-based remote toll payment technology in a real-world road environment in North Carolina, USA, together with global automaker Audi and traffic infrastructure specialist CapschTrafficComm.
This demonstration was conducted as a key program of the 'V2X Tolling Workshop,' jointly organized by the global V2X certification body Omniair Consortium and the North Carolina toll road operator.
Etipos utilized its vehicle terminal 'V2X-AIR' to achieve stable interoperability with CAPS's roadside base station based on standard V2X communication specifications.
About 100 people, including U.S. state government officials and payment solution experts, attended the event and showed great interest in the next-generation toll system.
The demonstration consisted of two methods: a complete vehicle integrated model and an aftermarket application model.
The V2X payment system integrated into Audi electric vehicles displayed payment information on the vehicle's display as soon as the vehicle passed through the tolling zone, and also introduced a function that automatically recognizes the number of passengers and adjusts the fee.
In addition, the separately installable dashboard-type terminal can be easily installed in existing vehicles. It can be utilized, proving market scalability.
Etipos’s competitiveness is evident not only in its technological capabilities but also in its compliance with the U.S. ‘Build America, Buy America (BABA)’ regulations.
The company has already established a production base in the United States to meet the requirements for participating in public infrastructure projects, thereby securing a favorable position in the North American toll payment infrastructure market.
The Omniair Consortium stated, “The collaboration between Etifos, Audi, and Capsch is an important example of accelerating the commercialization of V2X tolling technology,” and assessed that “this joint demonstration served as an opportunity to concretize the future of electronic toll collection and remote vehicle payment.”
Representatives from the global payment company Mastercard also participated in the event, presenting the potential for expansion beyond tolls into various remote mobility payment sectors such as parking lots, electric vehicle charging stations, and drive-throughs.
The industry anticipates that V2X-based payments will grow into a core infrastructure encompassing autonomous vehicles and unmanned mobility in the future.
Etipos plans to expand its influence in the global smart transportation market by leveraging this demonstration to lead V2X solutions that encompass OEM integration and the aftermarket.
