Infineon and Valeo Jointly Develop Laser-Based Automotive Ground Projection Module

High-resolution projection utilizing MEMS mirrors expands vehicle communication and safety functions
Infineon Technologies and Valeo have embarked on the development of a laser-based module that projects information onto the ground around a vehicle. The two companies are collaborating to simultaneously expand external vehicle communication and safety functions by utilizing laser beam scanning technology.

The two companies announced the collaboration on April 28 and stated that they are currently integrating technologies for the development of a short-range ground projection module. This collaboration focuses on implementing a new type of vehicle interface by combining semiconductor and vehicle lighting technologies.

The module under development is based on Infineon's 2D MEMS mirror and control technology. This enables the projection of high-resolution images onto the ground and is characterized by providing visual information recognizable even in daylight environments by enhancing brightness and contrast. The initial product utilizes a two-color output method, and future development is planned to expand the color range.

This technology is also expected to be highly useful in terms of the vehicle user experience. Interaction between the user and the vehicle can be enhanced by displaying graphics or messages on the ground when approaching or leaving the vehicle. Automakers can utilize this to implement unique lighting patterns for each brand or provide personalized guidance features.

The potential for application in the safety sector is also being suggested. If a vehicle visually displays its intention for sudden braking or turning on the ground, it can convey intuitive information to various road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. In particular, analysis suggests that when combined with digital communication-based V2X functions, it can be utilized as a means to complement existing methods of signal transmission between vehicles.

However, the actual scope of application for these features may vary depending on relevant regulations and certification procedures. The industry anticipates that visual-based communication will complement existing warning systems and serve as a catalyst for expanding the methods of information delivery in road environments.
