US Nevada plant aims for 50,000 units per year; attention focuses on whether it can overcome limitations of heavy weight and long distances.

With Tesla beginning mass production of its heavy-duty electric truck, the 'Semi,' there are signs that the transition to commercial vehicle electrification is accelerating. The potential for applying electric vehicles is emerging as a key variable in the heavy-duty truck sector, which requires long-distance transport and high payload capacities.

The Korea Automotive Research Institute recently published a report titled "(Industry Analysis Vol. 167) Semi Opening the Curtain on Heavy Truck Electrification."

According to this report, Tesla began mass production of its large battery electric truck, the Semi, at its Nevada plant in the U.S. in April. With an annual production target of 50,000 units, it is pushing for commercialization in the North American trunk logistics market.

■ Technical Challenges of Heavy Truck Electrification

The Semi is a Class-8 truck with a gross weight of 15 to 36 tons and is a representative vehicle responsible for long-distance transportation in North American logistics. Previously, the transition to electrification was limited due to battery weight and energy efficiency issues.

Large electric trucks must be equipped with batteries weighing several tons to enable long-distance operation, which leads to problems such as reduced payload capacity and decreased fuel efficiency. As a result, the diesel truck-centered structure has been maintained.

The Semi has adopted an approach to improve these limitations through a high-voltage battery and a lightweight design. Based on an approximately 822kWh battery and a dedicated architecture, it aims for a driving range of up to 500 miles (approx. 805 km).

In addition, it is designed to maintain existing transportation operation patterns by utilizing a fast charging system capable of charging the battery to about 60% within 30 minutes.

■ Competitive structure centered on power efficiency and operating costs

The Semi achieved an energy efficiency of approximately 1.7 kWh/mile through weight reduction and aerodynamic improvements. This is analyzed to be a high level compared to some competing models.

In terms of operations, reduced electricity-based fuel and maintenance costs are cited as key factors. According to the analysis, electric trucks have lower fuel and maintenance costs compared to diesel, suggesting the potential to reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

However, further verification is required to determine whether economic feasibility is maintained under actual operating conditions, such as battery life, parts replacement cycles, and maintenance infrastructure.

■ Increased Global Competition and Industrial Impact

Mass production of the Semi is expected to begin primarily in the North American market. This is because, due to varying logistics environments and regulations across countries, production and operations for heavy trucks will initially focus on local operations.

On the other hand, global competition is expected to intensify as Chinese and European companies are also expanding the development of electric trucks.

From an industrial perspective, truck electrification is a field directly linked to logistics costs and environmental impact. In a road transport structure where trucks account for a large share, electrification can affect the manufacturing cost structure and reduce carbon emissions.

Consequently, the electrification of large commercial vehicles is considered a change that extends its impact beyond the automotive industry to the logistics, energy, and environmental sectors.
