Ministry of Science and ICT to Fully Promote Leading Project for Supercomputer Development
Design hardware and software together to develop prototypes The Ministry of Science and ICT will invest 46 billion won by 2023 to develop a supercomputer CPU using domestic technology.
The core of this project is to design both hardware (HW) and software (SW) to develop the central processing unit (CPU), the core of a supercomputer, using our own technology.
▲ A budget of 46 billion won will be invested by 2023 to develop a supercomputer CPU using domestic technology. The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on March 26 that it will launch a pilot supercomputer development project in earnest starting this year and invest a total of KRW 46 billion (KRW 9 billion in 2020) over four years from 2020 to 2023.
First, we will develop software and computational nodes to secure and operate high-performance, low-power CPU and core design technology for supercomputers, and develop a cluster system prototype by connecting multiple computational nodes.
In addition, we design hardware and software technologies together from the early stages of development to maximize CPU utilization, and secure the technology to design CPUs specialized for supercomputing applications.
The Ministry of Science and ICT aims to complete the development of supercomputer CPU technology through this project by developing a supercomputer CPU prototype and conducting follow-up research in four years.
For this purpose, through cooperation between industry, academia, and research institutes, We plan to conduct research in the form of a consortium and include companies or institutions that utilize supercomputers in the consortium in the future by utilizing the research and development results.
▲ The core of the supercomputer development leading project is to design HW and SW together. Koh Seo-gon, director of the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Basic Research Policy Bureau, said, “The supercomputer development pilot project is a very challenging research and development project that aims to develop a supercomputer CPU.” He added, “We plan to complete a supercomputer CPU prototype over the next four years and plan and link follow-up research and development projects through a preliminary feasibility study to develop a supercomputer CPU with our own technology.”
A supercomputer is a computer system that can produce, process, and utilize large amounts of data at extremely high speeds. The government has supported the development of supercomputer technology based on the National High-Performance Computer Utilization and Promotion Act enacted in 2011.
