ADI Supports NVIDIA MGX-Based AI Data Center 800VDC Power Architecture

Transition from 48V to 800VDC, providing AI infrastructure power protection, power conversion, and monitoring technology

Analog Devices (ADI) has presented power technology designed to address the transition of power infrastructure in AI data centers. This reflects the growing trend of 800VDC-based architectures to meet the increasing power demand driven by the proliferation of generative AI.

Analog Devices announced on the 8th that it is providing power technology that supports the application of an 800VDC power structure to AI data centers based on the NVIDIA MGX architecture. The company explained that a transition from existing 48V power systems to high-voltage DC-based systems is underway.

An AI Factory is a data center architecture that performs AI model training and inference based on GPU clusters. Recently, computational load and power demand are increasing due to the proliferation of generative AI and Large-Scale Language Models (LLM).

It has been pointed out that the existing 48V power structure has limitations in adequately handling the power density required in high-performance GPU environments. Accordingly, the introduction of an 800VDC rack-based power structure is underway, centered on NVIDIA MGX-based systems.

The 800VDC method has the characteristic of reducing current and power loss and simplifying the power distribution system. In addition, it is designed with a structure that allows for megawatt-class rack expansion, and is cited as a power method suitable for large-scale AI data centers.

The MGX architecture includes a design that separates computing equipment and power systems based on a modular structure. This enables flexible infrastructure configuration in response to changes in GPU platforms.

However, in an 800VDC environment, technical requirements due to high voltage increase. Inrush current control, fault detection and protection, and real-time power monitoring are cited as major challenges.

Analog Devices announced that it provides power protection, power conversion, and telemetry (real-time data acquisition and analysis) technologies to address this. Key technologies include high-voltage hot-swap controllers and DC-DC conversion solutions.

The company also explained that the technology supports rapid protection in high-voltage environments, system status monitoring, and data collection for predictive maintenance (PdM).

Analog Devices announced that it plans to expand technical support aimed at improving the efficiency and scalability of AI data center power infrastructure by collaborating with the NVIDIA MGX ecosystem.
