ON Semi Launches 'GaNEXUS' GaN Power Product Family... Targeting Power Efficiency in AI Data Centers

ON Semi has launched 'GaNEXUS,' a gallium nitride (GaN)-based power product family targeting next-generation power architectures. Amid growing demands for power conversion efficiency and thermal management in high-power applications such as AI data centers, 48V power systems, robotics, and industrial automation, ON Semi is expanding its power semiconductor portfolio through the GaN product family.

ON Semi announced on the 11th that it has begun supplying samples of GaNEXUS FETs and GaNEXUS Smart 650V GaN FETs in the 40V to 650V voltage range. This product family is designed to enable customers to selectively optimize application-specific voltage, efficiency, thermal characteristics, and system costs alongside its existing silicon and EliteSiC power semiconductor portfolios.

GaNEXUS focused on increasing power density and thermal performance based on fast switching speeds and low switching losses. In low-to-medium voltage systems, it can be applied to 48V intermediate bus converters for AI servers, battery backup devices, motor drives, etc., and can reduce the size of magnetic components by about 30–60% and increase power density by about 1.5–2 times. Depending on the topology, efficiency can be improved by about 0.5–2%.

The expansion of AI infrastructure is considered a major variable in the power semiconductor market. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projected that global data center power consumption will increase from approximately 415 TWh in 2024 to 945 TWh in 2030. As power demand grows, the importance of technologies that reduce losses and cooling burdens in server power supply chains is also increasing.

In the high-voltage region, key targets include AI power shelves, high-voltage DC-DC conversion, PFC, and LLC power stages. GaNEXUS is designed to reduce magnetic component size by up to approximately 60% in high-frequency AC-DC and resonant stages, and to increase power density by about 1.5 to 2 times in PFC, LLC, and high-voltage DC-DC architectures. Another goal is to reduce the thermal burden of small, high-power systems by reducing losses.

“As customers demand higher power in smaller spaces, engineers need design flexibility to go beyond the limitations of existing power architectures,” said Antoine Jalaver, Vice President of ON Semi’s GaN Business Unit. “The GaNEXUS portfolio is a product family designed to support new power system designs.”

ON Semi plans to expand GaNEXUS into a system-level power solution by combining it with the TREO platform, which integrates sensing, control, protection, and power management functions. Additionally, the company's strategy is to reduce customers' design complexity and certification burdens by providing thermally optimized packages, such as TOLL bottom cooling, TOLT top cooling, and 3.3mm x 3.3mm and 5mm x 6mm dual-cooled packages.
