ISO 21780 compliant · Supports 8-channel independent configuration
Targeting mild hybrid and auxiliary electronic systems
STMicroelectronics (ST) has launched a new pre-driver product targeting 48V automotive electronic systems and is targeting the relevant market.
ST announced on the 15th that it has released the 48V automotive MOSFET predriver 'L98GD8E'.
According to the company, the product is designed to comply with the ISO 21780 standard, which specifies electrical requirements and test criteria for 48V electrical systems for road vehicles.
The L98GD8E is an 8-channel predriver that supports a maximum absolute rating of 75V. Each channel can be configured independently, enabling high-side or low-side driving using external N-channel and P-channel MOSFETs. A single chip supports up to two H-bridge controls, relays, motors, and resistive and capacitive load controls, and also provides peak-and-hold control for small valves.
The product features slew rate control during MOSFET switching to support compliance with Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements. It also includes built-in diagnostic functions to detect ground shorts, battery shorts, and open loads, as well as overcurrent protection. Additionally, it is equipped with two 10-bit ADCs for monitoring battery voltage and chip temperature. Configuration and diagnostic functions via the SPI interface are also provided.
Key application areas include 48V mild hybrid systems, energy recovery devices, electric compressors, and integrated starter generators (ISG). Recently, the automotive industry has been expanding the adoption of 48V power networks from the existing 12V-centric structure to increase electrification capabilities, reduce wiring weight, and improve energy efficiency. The 48V system has the advantage of reducing wiring losses and cable weight because it can deliver the same power with lower current.
The industry anticipates that 48V electrical architectures will expand their scope of application not only in mild hybrid vehicles but also in next-generation vehicle platforms where high-power electrical devices are increasing. ST's strategy is to address the demand for flexible load control and safety assurance required in 48V power systems through the L98GD8E.
The L98GD8E is supplied in a 10mm × 10mm TQFP64 package, with a unit price starting at $3.95 for 1,000 units.
