KERI, Special Defense Electrical Technology Class for Naval Academy Cadets

Introduction to Future Battlefield Technologies such as Electric Ships and EMP
The Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) invited cadets from the Naval Academy to host a science and culture program called "Electric Shock Classroom," introducing defense electrical technology for future battlefields. This event was organized to mark the Month of Patriots and Veterans and the 50th anniversary of the institution's founding.

KERI announced on the 23rd that it held this event together with the Gyeongnam Science and Culture Hub Center of Gyeongnam Technopark.

The focus was placed on conveying science and technology-centered defense leadership to cadets and sharing the results of national strategic technology research.

Son Hong-kwan, Director of the Defense Technology Strategy Office, delivered a special lecture on the topic of 'The Future Battlefield Seen Through Electricity and the Role of KERI'.

The special lecture covered the paradigm shift of the future battlefield driven by electrification.

Director Son explained that the existing concept of 'ammunition resupply' is shifting to a method of 'charging' energy, and pointed out the potential for utilizing non-kinetic energy weapon systems such as high-power lasers (HEL) and electromagnetic pulses (EMP), KERI reported.

Along with this, KERI’s defense R&D achievements were also introduced, including submarine lithium-electric systems, EMP protection technology, high-power electromagnetic wave-based anti-drone systems, and microgrids for field units.

Following the special lecture, the cadets toured the Land Based Test Site (LBTS).

LBTS is a facility that verifies the performance and reliability of submarine electric propulsion systems by simulating the maritime operating environment on land.

Lee Hyun-gu, Director of the Electric Propulsion System Research Center, explained the core principles of the vessel and the current status of research.

Finally, a mentoring session was held with Senior Specialist Lee Jeong-hoon, who is in charge of defense R&D technology cooperation at KERI after retiring as a naval officer.

The cadets asked about the Navy's future vision, the role of science and technology, and the competencies required as officers.

Director Kim Nam-kyun said, “In June, the Month of Patriots and Veterans, the future nation"We have prepared an opportunity for young talents who will be responsible for the weir to realize the strategic value of cutting-edge electrical technology and experience the site of national strategic technology research," he said. "Through science and culture programs, we will engage with future generations and spread the value of national defense electrical technology."

KERI is a government-funded research institute under the National Science and Technology Research Council of the Ministry of Science and ICT. To mark its 50th anniversary this year, it is operating the 'Zzzzzzz Electric Class' for people of various ages and backgrounds.
