STMicroelectronics today unveiled the STM32WB50 Value Line, a pin-compatible derivative of the STM32WB55 SoC for cost-sensitive connected devices. The new products feature a link budget of 100dB in Bluetooth 5.0 mode and 104dB in 802.15.4 mode.

The STM32WB50, which uses the Arm Cortex-M4 for user application software and the Cortex-M0+ to run the radio subsystem such as the radio stack and security, is suitable for development of real-time applications that require isolation of the radio stack and application for security reasons or that require high performance.

The STM32WB50 provides robust application protection with AES-256 onboard along with basic security features. It has 1MByte of Flash and 128KByte of RAM to allow Over-The-Air (OTA) updates for the wireless stack. The STM32WB50 inherits the power-saving modes of the STM32WB55, making it suitable for energy-saving applications.

The integration of the balun circuit reduces the BOM and simplifies the PCB layout. To further reduce BOM costs, the STM32WB50 package allows for a simplified PCB configuration with a maximum of two layers.

A derivative of the STM32WB55, the STM32WB50 is integrated into the STM32Cube ecosystem. As such, it features Bluetooth 5.0, BLE Mesh, ZigBee 3.0, and OpenThread certified stacks, distributed free of charge in the STM32CubeWB MCU package.

It includes a comprehensive toolset such as STM32CubeMonRF for wireless performance evaluation and the STM32CubeProg programmer that provides secure programming capabilities for the RF stack.

The STM32WB50 MCU is now in production, priced at $1.89 in the QFN48 package.
