▲2022 Q2 Sales of 6 Global Automotive Semiconductor Companies (Unit: USD 100 million)

The main driver of growth is the vehicle electrification trend
Continued growth expected in the second half

The 2022 second quarter business performance of global automotive semiconductor companies recorded high growth despite the global shortage of automotive semiconductor parts and increased demand amid the war in Ukraine and Russia.

According to an analysis of the business performance of six global automotive semiconductor companies surveyed by our newspaper in the second quarter of 2022, sales reached $17.958 billion, up 2% year-on-year, and operating profit reached $6.866 billion, up 49.5% year-on-year.

Texas Instruments (TI) ranked first in sales. TI's sales for the second quarter of 2022 were $5.212 billion, up 13.8% year-on-year, and operating profit was $2.723 billion, up 23%. Net income was $2.291 billion, up 18.6% year-on-year.

“TI’s product portfolio and strategy were key drivers of our second-quarter revenue growth,” said Rich Templeton, TI’s president and CEO. “We now expect third-quarter revenue to be in the range of $4.9 billion to $5.3 billion.”

STMicroelectronics (ST) reported revenue of $3.837 billion in the second quarter of 2022, up 28.2% year-over-year, and operating profit increased significantly by 105% to $1.04 billion. Net income also increased 110.4% year-on-year to $867 million.

The increase in sales of ADG (Automotive & Discrete Group) is noteworthy.

ADG's net sales increased 35% year-over-year to $1.454 billion, and operating profit showed a whopping 252% growth to $359 million.

“Continued strong demand for ST’s products has had a positive impact on sales growth,” said Jean-Marc Chery, CEO of ST. “The growth of our sub-groups has also been remarkable, and the outlook for the second half of the year is also good.”

Infineon's Q2 2022 sales increased 17.5% year-over-year to $3.792 billion based on exchange rates as of June 30, and operating profit increased 75.9% to $723 million.

As electric vehicles become more widespread, Infineon's automotive sales also increased significantly compared to last year. The automotive sector's sales in the second quarter of 2022 were $2.016 billion as of June 30, accounting for 47% of total sales and up 41% year-on-year.

In the 2022 business results report, Infineon CEO Jochen Hanebeck said, “Although there is uncertainty due to rising raw material prices and the pandemic, demand for semiconductors has increased due to the decarbonization and digitalization trends. Infineon will closely monitor market trends and respond quickly.”

NXP's Q2 2022 revenue was $3.312 billion, up 5.6% year-over-year, operating profit was $943 million, and net income was $683 million, up 8% and 2.6%, respectively.

NXP is particularly dependent on the automotive sector.

NXP's automotive segment revenue grew 36% year over year to $1.713 billion, up 10% from the previous quarter. The automotive segment accounted for 51% of NXP's total revenue, ranking first among all segments and trailing the second-place Industrial & IoT segment by $1 billion.

“Demand in the automotive and industrial & IoT end markets has outpaced our supply,” said Kurt Sievers, CEO of NXP. “We are confident that the two new processor families announced on June 21 will support the acceleration of the automotive industry.”

Japan's Renesas also saw its sales increase by more than $1 billion.

Renesas' Q2 2022 sales were $3.032 billion as of June 30, 2022, up 51.6% year-over-year, and operating profit was $889 million, up 172.7%.

Sales actually increased despite the shutdown of three factories due to the earthquake in Fukushima in March 2022.

Renesas' automotive semiconductor division sales in the second quarter of 2022 were $1.32 billion (163.8 billion yen), up 54% year-on-year, living up to its reputation as the world's third-largest automotive semiconductor company.

Onsemi also showed an upward trend. Sales in the second quarter of 2022 increased 24.9% year-over-year to $2.085 billion, and operating profit showed an explosive increase of 107.1% to $584 million.

Net income also increased 147.8% to $456 million compared to $184 million in the same period last year.

Onsemi said there was high demand in vehicle electrification, autonomous driving, and IIoT.

Onsemi has three major business divisions: PSG (Power Solutions Group), ASG (Advanced Solutions Group), and ISG (Intelligent Sensing Group).

Of the total sales of 2.085 billion dollars, the PSG division recorded sales of 1.057 billion dollars, ASG recorded 716 million dollars, and ISG recorded 311 million dollars, accounting for 50.7%, 34.4%, and 14.9%, respectively.
