Accelerating Next-Generation Communication Network Innovation
AMD EPYC processors simultaneously enhance performance and energy efficiency of next-generation 5G network infrastructure.
AMD announced on the 11th that Nokia has introduced its 5th generation AMD EPYC processor to the Nokia Cloud Platform.
This collaboration will enable Nokia to deliver superior performance per watt across virtualized environments, significantly increasing the competitiveness of its cloud solutions for telecommunications and enterprises.
“Telecom operators demand reliable scalability and power efficiency even as their 5G networks evolve,” said Dan McNamara, senior vice president and general manager, Server Business Unit, AMD. “Our collaboration with Nokia enables us to apply the industry-leading performance and energy savings of the 5th Gen AMD EPYC processor across their network infrastructure.”
“This collaboration demonstrates our commitment to innovation through our diverse chip partnerships,” said Karl De, senior vice president and general manager of Nokia’s Cloud and Network Services business unit. “The new AMD EPYC 9005 series can handle complex 5G core, edge, and enterprise workloads while supporting our carbon reduction goals.”
With this introduction, Nokia Cloud Platform has secured a computing environment optimized for container-based 5G network core and edge applications.
Especially the AMD Epic 9005Liz's strengths are in running large-scale virtual machines and containers simultaneously, minimizing latency and dramatically reducing power consumption.
As data traffic on 5G networks explodes, carriers face the challenge of finding a balance between throughput per server and power efficiency.
Nokia lowers Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by reducing CPU overhead and energy costs across virtualized environments based on AMD's high-efficiency CPUs.
Additionally, the Nokia Cloud Platform leverages the security capabilities of AMD EPYC processors to meet the needs of mission-critical applications such as real-time network slicing, smart factories, and autonomous vehicle communications.
Hardware-level memory encryption (SEV) and real-time encryption acceleration further enhance network security.
The two companies will also explore a hybrid cloud architecture combined with GPU acceleration solutions to support accelerated AI and machine learning workloads in the future.
Through this, we plan to provide advanced network automation functions such as network failure prediction, maintenance optimization, and real-time traffic management.
This collaboration is expected to solidify the position of AMD EPYC processors in the communications infrastructure sector.
Nokia plans to strengthen its global 5G market strategy by launching pilot services targeting major telecommunications companies within the year and expanding to commercial networks by 2026.
