Combining wireless expertise and the powerful STM32 embedded ecosystem
STMicroelectronics, a global semiconductor leader, announced today that it has started mass production of the ST67W611M1 module that integrates Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.4.
The module is the first result of a collaboration between ST and Qualcomm Technologies, and is designed to simplify wireless connectivity in STM32 microcontroller (MCU)-based systems.
Along with this announcement, ST also shared the success story of Siana Systems, which achieved rapid time-to-market for its connectivity solutions by adopting the ST67W611M1 module early.
The ST67W module combines ST’s embedded design expertise and the STM32 ecosystem with wireless connectivity technology from Qualcomm Technologies.
“Wireless connectivity is a key enabler of the intelligent, cloud-connected edge,” said Jerome Vanthournout, Business Director, Short Range Radio, STMicroelectronics. “This modular solution enables product developers to focus their resources at the application level and bring new products to market faster.”
Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies “The ST67W module not only simplifies the integration of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in STM32 microcontroller-based devices, but also provides exceptional flexibility and scalability,” said Shishir Gupta. “It is a testament to our shared commitment to innovation and excellence in the IoT.”
The ST67W module can be integrated with all STM32 MCUs and includes a multiprotocol network coprocessor from Qualcomm Technologies and a 2.4GHz radio.
It also has all RF front-end circuits built-in, including power/low-noise amplifiers, RF switches, baluns, and an integrated PCB antenna, as well as 4Mbyte flash and a 40MHz crystal for code and data storage.
The module comes pre-certified with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4 capabilities as per the required specifications, with Thread and Matter support coming soon via software update.
Board-level options for coaxial and external antenna connections are also provided.
It also has powerful features in terms of security. With encryption accelerators and secure debug and secure boot functions equivalent to PSA certification level 1, it can easily respond to the Cyber Resilience Act and the Wireless Device Directive (RED Directive) that will be implemented in the future.
The ST67W module enables product developers to easily implement workable solutions without requiring RF design expertise. It is a highly integrated solution based on a 32-pin LGA package that can be mounted directly on the board and enables simple and economical PCB design with a minimum of two layers.
Siana Systems is one of the first IoT technology companies to adopt the ST67W module to improve product performance and shorten time to market.
“The ST67W module expands the opportunities to add Wi-Fi to a wide range of STM32 microcontroller-based devices, while alleviating the burden of minimum requirements,” said Sylvain Bernard, founder and solutions architect at Siana Systems. “Simple integration of the module allows designers to quickly implement Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity with minimal additional engineering, making it the perfect solution for next-generation product designs.”
The ST67W611M1 leverages the STM32 ecosystem, which offers over 4000 commercial STM32 MCU variants, powerful STM32Cube tools and software, and advanced features to accelerate edge AI development.
The STM32 family ranges from the economical Arm® Cortex®-M0+ to the Cortex-M4 and Cortex-M55 with DSP extensions, and high-performance cores such as the Cortex-A7 in the STM32MP1/2 MPUs.
The ST67W611M1 wireless module is available now in a 32-pin LGA package, priced starting at $6.66 for 10,000-piece quantities. The X-NUCLEO-67W61M1 expansion board and the STDES-ST67W61BU-U5 reference design are also available to support evaluation and development.
