The notebook and PC user experience is taking a leap forward with new user detection technology from STMicroelectronics.

ST announced on the 11th that it has achieved security, power saving, and privacy protection simultaneously in everyday PC use by combining ToF (Time-of-Flight)-based sensor technology and its own AI algorithm.

The VL53L8CP sensor with ST's 'FlightSense™' technology and AI algorithm analyze the user's head direction and position in real time to automatically adjust the screen brightness, implement the 'Wake-Away Lock' function that locks the PC when the user leaves the seat, and the 'Wake-on-Attention' function that automatically wakes the PC when the user re-approaches.

These features can result in power savings of more than 20% per day on average. Additionally, it supports hands-free Windows Hello authentication to enhance user convenience.

Multi-Person Detection protects sensitive information by detecting and alerting people looking over your shoulder.

It is gaining attention as a new standard for personal information protection as it provides a safe user environment without using a camera.

ST has developed advanced algorithms such as Presence AI, Head Orientation AI (HOR AI), and Posture AI based on thousands of distance and posture data, providing not only head orientation tracking but also health monitoring functions.

In particular, AI is designed to minimize power consumption, making it easy to integrate with existing sensor hubs.

According to Yole Group, the ToF sensor market is expected to grow from $2.2 billion in 2024 to $3.8 billion in 2030, with increasing utilization in various fields such as laptops, mobile devices, and spatial computing.

ST has supplied technology to more than 260 notebook models and is ready to lead the market with this new product that simultaneously enhances energy efficiency and user convenience.
