[Editor's Note] With the rapid development of wide bandgap semiconductor technology and the innovative improvement in the efficiency of power conversion systems, the electric power industry is establishing itself as a key axis of the 4th industrial revolution. As the spread of electric vehicles, the rapid increase in data centers, and the acceleration of the transition to new and renewable energy all occur simultaneously, the market demand for intelligent power management technology is increasing explosively. In particular, as the government's goal of becoming one of the top three AI industry powerhouses and the plan to build an energy highway overlap, expectations for changes in the entire power technology ecosystem and cutting-edge technologies of related companies are higher than ever. In the midst of this, STMicroelectronics participated in the 2025 Power Electronics Conference held at the Pyeongchang Alpensia Convention Center from July 7 to 10 and introduced the latest developments in power semiconductor technology to the market. Accordingly, our magazine met with Jang Jet, Marketing Manager of the Power & Discrete Business Unit at STMicroelectronics Korea, and conducted an interview.

■ I am curious about the demos and key benefits that STMicroelectronics, one of the global power semiconductor powerhouses, will be showcasing at this event.

This year’s KIPE 2025 demo exhibition showcased a range of innovative demos focusing on STMicroelectronics’ advanced SiC (Silicon Carbide) and power technologies.

In particular, the high-power traction inverter solution has dramatically improved the inverter performance of electric and hybrid vehicles by simultaneously implementing a wide operating range, high efficiency, and compact size by applying SiC MOSFET technology and ACEPACK DRIVE power modules. This allows customers to benefit from high power density and modular design.

■ Main application areas are

STMicroelectronics' SiC and power module technologies are widely applied in various industries where power efficiency and reliability are critical.

The most representative fields are the electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) markets, where SiC MOSFETs and power modules are optimized for vehicle traction inverters, onboard chargers (OBCs), and DC-DC converters based on their high power density and excellent thermal management performance.

This allows for extended vehicle range, improved energy efficiency, and smaller vehicle systems.

Also in the field of industrial power converters, ST's SiC solutions contribute to energy savings and improved reliability in renewable energy inverters, server power supplies, factory automation, and robotics due to their high-speed switching and low-loss characteristics.

Additionally, in data centers and communications & server infrastructure, highly integrated SiC power modules will play a key role in maximizing power conversion efficiency, reducing operating costs and enabling green energy use.

It is expected to contribute to the development of industries in the space/aviation fields, including hydrogen trams, electric ships, and UAM in the future.

■ Key requirements of the market/industry

The electric vehicle (EV) market is currently at a critical turning point, entering the “chasm” phase, moving from initial demand to mass adoption.

In the process, the market is overheating due to the rapid growth and intensifying competition of Chinese electric vehicles, and competition is becoming more intense as many SiC manufacturers are emerging.

Power electronics in this environment The key requirements demanded by the market and industry are high efficiency, high reliability, miniaturization, and cost competitiveness.

In order to extend the driving range and shorten the charging time of electric vehicles, power conversion efficiency must be maximized, and miniaturization considering space constraints within the vehicle is also essential.

In addition, in a rapidly changing market environment, securing a competitive pricing policy and a stable supply chain is very important.

The SiC industry, including STMicroelectronics, is investing the most resources in converting SiC wafer production from 6 inches to 8 inches.

■ What are the differences compared to competitors’ products or existing products?

First, market share and product portfolio.

ST has a wide range of SiC products in voltages from 650 V to 2,200 V, and offers a wide range of solutions in discrete, bare die, and module formats.

In particular, the latest 3rd and 4th generation SiC technologies dramatically reduce power loss by improving RDS(on) × area by up to 50% compared to the previous generation, contributing to extending the driving range of electric vehicles and improving system efficiency.

These technological capabilities are the foundation for ST to secure a strong market share in the global SiC market.

Second, a stable supply chain and flexibility.

ST directly manages the entire process from raw material wafers to final products through its SiC vertical integration strategy.

We have established a global production network that includes 150mm wafer production in Norrkoping, Sweden, 6-8 inch front-end and back-end manufacturing at our SiC campus in Catania, Italy, and factories in Chongqing, China, Morocco, and Shenzhen, China, securing a stable supply chain.

This integration The production system maximizes quality control and delivery compliance, and has the flexibility to respond quickly to customer demands.

Third, technological innovation and differentiated performance.

ST's SiC products enable high-efficiency power conversion with low RDS(on), fast switching speeds, and excellent thermal characteristics.

In particular, highly integrated module solutions such as the ACEPACK DRIVE power module contribute to the miniaturization and improved reliability of various industrial and EV systems through their compact size and excellent heat dissipation performance.

In summary, STMicroelectronics provides customers with reliable, high-performance SiC solutions based on differentiated technologies, a robust supply chain, and a broad product portfolio, and maintains its leadership in the power electronics market to this day.

■ I understand that STMicroelectronics has been participating in the Power Electronics Conference for three consecutive years. What value does ST expect from participating in this academic conference?

STMicroelectronics has been participating in the Power Electronics Conference for three consecutive years, and we consider close communication and technical exchange with domestic power electronics engineers to be very important.

Through participation in this academic conference, we hope to directly introduce ST's advanced demos, which are newly promoted in the global market, to domestic engineers, thereby contributing to providing the domestic power electronics industry with the latest technology roadmap and innovative solutions.

In particular, ST's SiC and power module technologies are leading the market in various fields such as electric vehicles, industrial power conversion, and data centers based on the core values of high efficiency, high reliability, miniaturization, and cost competitiveness.

By experiencing and understanding these cutting-edge technologies and products directly at the conference venue, we expect to establish a foundation for domestic engineers to proactively respond to future market changes.

In addition, we expect that the industrial technology session presentations by foreign speakers from ST Power & Discrete Business Division will be an important opportunity to understand the needs of current and potential customers and reflect them in the development of new products and solutions.

Through these customer-centric innovations, ST aims to contribute to the development of the Korean power electronics industry and support customer success by delivering the latest technologies more easily and quickly.
