The PSoC™ 4100T Plus, announced by Infineon Technologies, is at the heart of this transformation. By integrating touch interface (HMI) and system control functions on a single chip, this MCU is attracting attention as an "all-in-one platform" encompassing smart home appliances, industrial equipment, and even automotive HMIs.

“The PSoC™ 4100T Plus is no longer just a touch chip. “With this product, we aim to set the benchmark for a true next-generation MCU that integrates control, sensing, and communication functions throughout the system,” said Jin-Yong Lee, manager at Infineon, summing up the product’s philosophy in one sentence.

Advanced System Control: A More Powerful 'Built-in Brain'

The PSoC™ 4100T Plus is a step forward from the previous PSoC 4 family, which focused on touch HMI, and has significantly strengthened system control functions such as analog-to-digital conversion (ADC), PWM, and serial communication.

Built-in SAR ADC: The high-speed SAR ADC with an 8-channel sequencer and 1MSPS sample rate simplifies board design by processing external sensors, voltage inputs, etc. directly on-chip.

TCPWM Module: Six 16-bit TC-PWMs can be used for various purposes such as motor driving, lighting dimming, and precision timing, and can operate independently or in conjunction.

Expanded communication interface: Equipped with five SCB blocks that can be configured for I²C, SPI, UART, etc., it can operate multiple communication channels stably and simultaneously.

Class B C2 certified safety library: Supports certified libraries that can be directly applied to high-reliability applications such as medical and industrial applications.

The Core of Innovation, 5th Generation CAPSENSE™: The Evolution of Capacitive Touch

CAPSENSE&tr, the culmination of Infineon's 20 years of capacitive technologyade; 5th generation technology boasts a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tenfold improved over the previous 4th generation. This enables stable and fast responses even in smaller, thicker, and more complex touch environments.

"Previously, the biggest challenge was touch accuracy on thick cover glass or small buttons. However, the 5th generation CAPSENSE™ responds even on 18mm overlays and operates without malfunction even in ultra-small devices such as TWS earphones," the manager emphasized, emphasizing that this fundamentally resolved the limitations in HMI design.

Additionally, the differential structure makes it resistant to environmental noise, and the Always-On function consumes only about 8μA without CPU intervention, enabling immediate response even during standby. Equipped with a proximity detection function, it is possible to implement a futuristic interface that prepares the UI in advance the moment your hand approaches.

Multi-Sense Integration: Touch, Inductance, and Liquid Sensing on a Single Chip

In addition to capacitive touch, the PSoC™ 4100T Plus integrates inductive sensing and liquid level sensing, enabling a variety of environmental sensing capabilities on a single chip.

Inductive sensing recognizes the proximity of fingers even under metal covers, supporting the implementation of metal touch UIs in high-end home appliances.

Liquid level detection detects the water level in the tank as a voltage change and operates in conjunction with the touch UI, enabling high functionality without separate parts.

"Demand for complex sensing, such as metal touch buttons on the front of high-end refrigerators or water tank level detection in water purifiers, is increasing. By processing these elements on a single chip, we have dramatically reduced customer design complexity," said Manager Lee Jin-yong, emphasizing the design optimization benefits of integrating Multi-Sense technology.

Flexible Development Tools: ModusToolbox™ Ecosystem

ModusToolbox™ integrates with various operating systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux, supporting various development environments and collaboration methods. Developers can quickly design HMIs and control systems by selecting only the necessary functions and modularizing functions such as visual CAPSENSE™ tuning, BSP, driver download, and UART/I²C self-test.

Additionally, the example-based project structure linked to GitHub ensures high portability and maintainability.

Machine Learning-Based HMI Future Strategy

Infineon proposes advanced HMIs based on on-chip machine learning as a future direction for the PSoC™ family. Through on-chip gesture analysis, adaptive tuning, and sensor fusion technologies, Infineon anticipates future MCUs will be able to "understand" user behavior.

We are currently introducing machine learning-based tuning to some liquid level sensors to prevent sensor malfunctions, and we plan to gradually expand edge AI capabilities with the PSoC™ Edge product family in the future.
