Merck will lead new business opportunities by combining its optical capabilities and semiconductor expertise.

Kim Woo-kyu, CEO of Merck Korea, said in an interview with our newspaper at the '2025 Korea Display Industry Exhibition (K-Display 2025)' held at COEX on the 7th that based on solid material technology, the company will provide more comprehensive and integrated solutions to customers in a wide range of fields ranging from displays to semiconductors and new business opportunities such as AR and VR.

To this end, CEO Woo-Kyu Kim mentioned that at this exhibition booth, he introduced a product portfolio that allows customers to experience business expansion beyond displays into optronics, as slogan "Merck realizes light" suggests.

In particular, Merck's materials intelligence solution utilizing AI can predict various characteristics of each material, enabling efficient development of customized materials. This technology will be used in this exhibition.In addition to the exhibition, Merck will share insights into future technologies through eight sessions of Merck Science Connect at IMID 2025, focusing on the future of visual technology.

Regarding the strategic significance of the recently acquired Unity-SC, CEO Woo-Kyu Kim said, “Through this acquisition, Merck can now cover all areas of light-matter interaction: creating, controlling, guiding, and analyzing,” and “We will be able to provide customers with more comprehensive and integrated solutions in a wide range of fields, from displays to semiconductors and new business opportunities such as AR and VR.”

He continued, “The integration of Unity SC’s layering and inspection solutions into our Optronics business unit will contribute to improving the quality, yield and manufacturing costs of heterogeneous integrated chip systems used in AI, high-performance computing, high-bandwidth memory and related applications. This will directly help our customers produce more efficient and reliable next-generation chips and devices.”
