Next-generation Rain RFID Chip 'UCODE X' Launched

NXP Semiconductors is accelerating its expansion in the global RFID market by officially launching the next-generation RAIN RFID chip 'UCODE X,' which features industry-leading read and write sensitivity and an ultra-low power design. This new product is designed to support the application of high-performance RFID required in large-scale operational environments such as retail, logistics, and healthcare, and is expected to significantly enhance companies' inventory management efficiency and regulatory responsiveness.

NXP announced on the 13th that UCODE X provides improved RF performance, flexible memory configuration, and the industry's lowest power consumption compared to existing models.

In particular, it is noteworthy that the scope of RFID application has been expanded to product categories that were previously difficult to tag, such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food, by supporting small Rain RFID labels.

With the recent tightening of global regulations such as the EU Digital Product Passport (EU DPP) and US FSMA 204, ensuring product traceability and consumer safety is emerging as a key challenge for companies.

In response to these changes, UCODE X provides the ability to directly store key product attributes, such as expiration dates, lot numbers, and recycling information, inside the chip.

Through this, companies can simultaneously achieve regulatory compliance, enhanced supply chain transparency, and improved operational efficiency.

Ralf Kodrich, Senior Director of NXP UCODE RFID, emphasized, “UCODE X combines NXP’s RF technology with a flexible memory configuration to enable smaller and more powerful RAIN RFID labels. It enables reliable tagging, especially in demanding product lines, and will be a significant advancement for companies looking to expand their RFID adoption.”

Danny Hark of RFID solution company Nedap also commented, “UCODE X is a key factor driving the maturation of continuous overhead reading technology,” adding that “it will contribute to preventing losses and optimizing inventory for retailers by enhancing real-time inventory visibility.”

Michael Pine of Zebra Technologies said, “UCODE “X provides the advanced sensitivity required for next-generation RFID solutions and maximizes ecosystem scalability with a GS1 Gen2V2 standard-based design,” he said.

UCODE X is designed to enhance speed and accuracy in various environments, such as inventory management, theft detection, expiration date tracking, and self-checkout. Built on the GS1 Gen2V2 standard, it offers excellent interoperability with a wide range of RFID readers and encoding devices. Additionally, it fully implements the GS1 Gen2V2 Untraceable feature to protect consumer privacy.

In particular, industry-leading read and write sensitivity increases encoding speeds and enables the application of tags to products that were previously difficult to read. Flexible memory configurations allow enterprises to tailor chip functions to their operating environments and simplify inventory management for inlay and label suppliers.

NXP explained that UCODE X is a sustainable option that supports the implementation of smaller inlays and reduces material usage. It also stated that through its hybrid manufacturing strategy, it can respond to customer needs by simultaneously securing supply chain stability and cost competitiveness.
