Siemens Xcelerator Introduced as Core Infrastructure for 'Future Advanced Shipyard'
Siemens is participating in HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering's project to build an integrated digital shipbuilding platform. This is an attempt to ensure consistency in global shipyard operations by connecting the entire process, from design to production, into a single data system.
On February 19 in Seoul, Siemens announced that HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering had selected Siemens as its preferred partner for building an integrated platform. The platform is set to serve as a digital backbone managing design and production data from HD Hyundai shipyards worldwide in a single flow.
This project is being pursued as a core foundation for the 'Future of Shipyard' project, which HD Hyundai is currently pursuing with the goal of completion in 2030. The project aims to resolve data disconnection issues that have occurred during the design and production processes and to establish a digital-based shipbuilding environment.
The platform is implemented based on Siemens Xcelerator. Design and production are connected in real-time via an integrated data backbone, creating a structure that reduces inefficiencies and errors between processes. In the integrated environment, CAD, PLM, digital manufacturing, automation, and simulation are linked, and key processes are designed to be pre-reviewed in a virtual environment.
Lee Tae-jin, Executive Vice President of the Digital Innovation Office at HD Hyundai, stated, “The introduction of Siemens Xcelerator serves as a catalyst to advance HD Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s digital shipbuilding strategy,” and announced plans to create a collaboration-centric environment by ensuring consistency between design and production. Tony Hemelgan, CEO of Siemens Digital Industries Software, explained that the two companies have been collaborating since 2022 to develop a next-generation design and production platform, noting that it is a structure optimized for implementing an integrated digital thread.
In the future, the platform plans to expand its scope of application to various vessel types, including merchant and special-purpose ships. It will extend to equipment and parts data management, digital model-based performance analysis, lifecycle-centric maintenance, and support systems for overseas shipbuilding projects. HD Hyundai also plans to establish a collaboration and learning environment based on the industrial metaverse by utilizing Digital Twin Composer.
The two companies aim to begin phased implementation in 2026 and apply it to actual operating vessels starting in 2028.
