Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low-power wireless connectivity solutions, has introduced a new firmware update solution to prepare for the implementation of the European Union's Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).

Nordic announced on the 26th that it has unveiled a single fixed-cost licensing model that provides Firmware Over-the-Air (FOTA) and device management capabilities throughout the device lifecycle via nRF Cloud.

The Cyber Resilience Act mandates that manufacturers of connected devices released in the European market starting in 2027 must provide updates for security vulnerabilities identified during the product's lifespan.

As a result, IoT manufacturers are placed in a situation where they must simultaneously consider maintaining long-term security and responding to regulations.

Nordic's solution significantly reduces this burden.

By utilizing nRF Cloud, which is pre-installed on all Nordic-based IoT devices, long-term security updates and device management are possible with a one-time initial cost without the need for a separate, complex infrastructure setup.

This enables manufacturers to quickly respond to CRA requirements as well as U.S. Cyber Trust Mark requirements.

nRF Cloud is nRF Connect SWith a chip-to-cloud architecture combined with DK, it provides verified FOTA capabilities even in large-scale environments.

Various management functions are integrated, including the MCUboot bootloader, low-power optimized transmission network, staged automatic deployment, rollback function, and audit log.

In particular, this model is characterized by providing a predictable cost structure without the burden of continuous cloud costs, unlike existing FOTA methods.

Nordic explained that this enables the simultaneous realization of long-term maintenance efficiency and a reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO).

This solution is based on the Memfault platform acquired by Nordic and has already been verified for its stability through millions of devices.

It is currently available in the nRF52, nRF53, and nRF54 series and the nRF91 cellular IoT family, with prices starting at a minimum of $1 per device.
