SK is leaping forward as an Asia-Pacific AI hub with Korea's largest AI data center.

SK Telecom, SK Ecoplant, AWS, and Ulsan Metropolitan City held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 'SK AI Data Center Ulsan,' the largest AI-only data center outside the metropolitan area, in Ulsan on August 29.

About 200 people attended the event, including Choi Chang-won, Chairman of the SK Supex Council, Yoo Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom, Kim Hyung-geun, CEO of SK Ecoplant, Kim Du-gyeom, Mayor of Ulsan, and AWS officials, and expressed their commitment to cooperation toward the future of the AI industry.

AI data centers are advanced IT infrastructures equipped with high-power, cooling, and network capabilities for high-performance AI computation, utilizing high-density GPUs that consume more than 20 to 40 kW of power per server rack.

Because it operates high-performance servers that consume large amounts of power, cooling capacity is also required at 40 to 100 kW per server rack, which is 4 to 10 times more than that of a typical data center.

Ulsan is an optimal location for building an AI data center, with a stable energy supply network, an industry-friendly environment, and submarine cable infrastructure. This project is a key factor in Ulsan's manufacturingIt is expected to establish itself as a key infrastructure accelerating industry innovation and digital transformation.

SK Group's major affiliates, including SK Telecom, SK Broadband, SK Gas, SK Chemicals, and SK Hynix, participated in this project by pooling their capabilities in the ICT, energy, and semiconductor sectors.

In particular, SK Gas and SK Multi-Utility's LNG combined heat and power plants provide a stable and eco-friendly power supply, and SK Eco Plant supports sustainable operation through a fuel cell-based power system and waste heat recycling cooling technology (WHRC).

SK Telecom plans to use this data center as a key base for its "AI Infrastructure Super Highway" to expand its AI infrastructure nationwide and strengthen its global competitiveness.

On this day, a memorandum of understanding was signed with Ulsan City, promising multifaceted cooperation in areas such as revitalizing the local economy, attracting customers, and creating jobs.

Chairman Choi Chang-won said, “SK AI Data Center Ulsan is a critical infrastructure that will lay the foundation for Korea’s digital economy,” and added, “SK will accompany Ulsan until the end on its journey to becoming an AI powerhouse.”

SKT CEO Yoo Young-sang emphasized, “Ulsan is a strategic opportunity to leap forward as an Asia-Pacific AI hub.”

SK Ecoplant CEO Kim Hyung-geun said, “SK Ecoplant will contribute to the creation of a national AI DC cluster based on its differentiated competitiveness in building AI infrastructure.”
