The 'XR Alliance' is the world's first 5G content alliance launched last September, with LG Uplus serving as its first chairman. It consists of a total of 6 member companies, including the American semiconductor company 'Qualcomm Technology' and the realistic content production company 'Felix & Paul Studios (hereinafter referred to as FPS)'.
Space Explorers: The ISS Experience is the first 3D 360 VR virtual reality (VR) content filmed in real space. The first episode, which was released this time, captures the astronauts’ adjustment period upon arriving at the International Space Station (ISS), as well as the joys and wonders they feel during life on the space station.
Through this, customers can see the inside of the spaceship, as well as the activities of astronauts in outer space, and the beautiful scenery of Earth. They can also experience flying through space alongside astronauts.
In order to produce this content, astronauts were trained in advance at FPS on how to operate special space cameras and VR filming methods. Since January 2019, they have been recording the International Space Station with a 3D 360 VR camera, and have shot over 200 hours of high-quality videos to date. Recently, they also captured the arrival of the SpaceX Falcon9 commercial crew.
As a member of the XR Alliance, FPS collaborated with influential external organizations to further enhance the quality of this project, including Time Studios in the US, ISS National Laboratory in the US, and NASA.
“Space Explorers: ISS Experience is the most ambitious project our studio has ever undertaken,” said Felix Lajeunesse, co-founder of FPS. “This is the most ambitious, most immersive and most realistic story ever filmed in space,” he said. “We are thrilled to distribute the upcoming four-episode series to a global audience through our Alliance members. Our vision for this project has been to take billions of people to space, and partnering with our Alliance members is a huge leap forward in delivering on that vision.”
Choi Yoon-ho, managing director in charge of XR strategy at LG Uplus, said, “The XR Alliance’s determination to move toward 5G immersive media has allowed us to quickly move forward with investment, production, and release,” adding, “We will continue to increase the number of things for customers to see and expand the market base through high-quality immersive media.”
