IMT-2030 (6G) Framework·Reflecting the latest global technology trends
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has published '6G Insight: Vision and Technology White Paper v2.0', which contains the direction and key technologies of the future 6G mobile communications era.
This white paper is a summary of the development direction of 6G technology currently under development with the goal of commercialization in 2030, and is expected to serve as an important reference for domestic and international industries, academia, and governments in establishing 6G research and development (R&D) strategies.
In particular, it is characterized by reflecting the IMT-2030 (6G) framework approved by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) and the latest global technology trends.
In this white paper, ETRI predicted that the 6G era will develop into a 'hyper-connected society with three-dimensional communications' that connects people and objects, reality and virtuality, and the ground and space.
Accordingly, the white paper includes six major 6G scenarios suggested by the ITU: immersive communications, ultra-low latency communications, hyper-connected communications, AI-communication convergence, sensing-communication convergence, and ubiquitous connectivity.
Through this technology, ETRI researchers expect to see advancements in fields that require real-time communication, such as more realistic extended reality (XR) services, robots, and self-driving cars.
In addition, AI-based customized communication services, while simultaneously detecting objects It seems that communication technology and providing uninterrupted networks will become possible.
The white paper also details 11 key technology areas for realizing the 6G vision.
△Includes ultra-large capacity and high-efficiency wireless technology, ultra-precision network, low-orbit satellite communication, low-power network, AI native network, intelligent mobile core, sensing and communication convergence, TN-NTN convergence technology, smart repeater, high-speed optical network, AI-based predictive security, and quantum cryptography.
In addition, it also contains a strategy for securing 6G frequencies, such as a strategy for securing the mid-band of 7 to 24 GHz and the sub-terahertz band of 100 GHz or more, and a plan for coexistence with satellite frequencies.
Since establishing the 6G vision in 2020, ETRI has been leading the establishment of a national 6G vision in cooperation with domestic research institutes, which has also been reflected in the ITU-R's international standard (IMT-2030).
Through the government's 6G core technology development project, more than 200 core patents have been applied for so far, and in 2024, a 200 Gbps wireless link was demonstrated for the first time in the world.
ETRI Stereoscopic Communication Research Lab Director Baek Yong-sun said, “This 6G white paper contains ETRI’s will and vision to prepare for the future communications era,” and “We plan to continue developing 6G technology and conducting international standardization activities so that Korea can lead the future communications market.”
Meanwhile, this white paper can be downloaded via QR code at the ETRI Conference exhibition booth held at COEX in Seoul on the 5th and through the ETRI homepage.
