Important progress that increases the possibility of practical commercialization of AI-RAN
KT and Samsung Electronics are jointly developing AI-based wireless network optimization technology, which is expected to accelerate innovation in communications infrastructure for the hyper-connected era of smartphones, IoT devices, and autonomous driving.
KT (CEO Kim Young-seop) and Samsung Electronics are jointly developing and successfully verifying artificial intelligence (AI)-based wireless network optimization technology, accelerating the acquisition of core technologies that will lead the next-generation 6G communications era.
This joint research was conducted in collaboration between KT Future Network Research Center and Samsung Research, and was conducted with the goal of autonomous optimization of wireless networks and providing a customized communication environment for users.
Existing networks typically apply the same network settings to all terminals connected to a single base station (cell).
On the other hand, it was difficult to take into account the circumstances of each individual terminal, so it could only remain at a uniform communication quality.
The newly developed technology uses AI to identify the user's signal stability, location, and movement path in real time, and automatically applies appropriate network settings to provide a faster and more stable connection.
In particular, it is gaining attention as a future network service because it includes functions such as learning the user's movement patterns and remembering situations in which problems occurred in the past to respond in advance. there is.
This AI-based wireless network optimization technology is evaluated as a significant advancement that increases the possibility of practical commercialization of AI-RAN (AI-based wireless access network).
AI-RAN is a next-generation intelligent radio network technology that enables the network to make decisions and adjust on its own, and is expected to become a key infrastructure in the future 6G era.
The results of this study went beyond simple experiments and analyzed various problem cases collected from actual communication networks, and verified the effectiveness of the technology through simulations built based on these cases.
KT and Samsung Electronics plan to begin commercialization in the second half of this year by starting verification in a test bed environment and then applying it to a real-world network.
“This research is a meaningful achievement that proves that the quality of user experience can be improved by applying AI,” said Vice President Jin-Gook Jeong, head of the Next Generation Communications Research Center at Samsung Research. “We will continue to realize technological innovation through the convergence of communications and artificial intelligence.”
KT Future Network Research Institute Director Jong-sik Lee emphasized, “This is a case that specifically proves the possibility of commercializing AI-based wireless networks,” and “Starting with this research, the two organizations will continue to cooperate and focus on securing technologies that will lead the 6G era.”
