Expanding overseas roaming support, enhancing security without replacing SIM cards
SK Telecom (CEO Yoo Young-sang) has strengthened its SIM card protection service and is upgrading it to block illegal SIM card duplication even in overseas roaming environments, allowing customers to use mobile communication services overseas with peace of mind.
SKT announced that it will be implementing an upgrade to its 'SIM Protection Service', which will provide the highest level of customer information protection even while roaming abroad, starting on the 12th.
SKT's SIM protection service is a security service that prevents unauthorized SIM card changes and illegal duplication by binding terminal information and SIM card information together.
Previously, use of the service was restricted when roaming overseas, but with this upgrade, the abnormal authentication blocking system (FDS) is applied so that the same level of security is maintained even overseas.
Accordingly, customers can safely use the service while traveling, and existing subscribers can use the automatically upgraded service from the 12th without a separate application.
SKT will proceed with automatic subscription sequentially from the 12th to the 14th for customers who have not yet used the SIM protection service.
This has enabled customers residing both domestically and overseas to receive service benefits. As of now, there are over 24 million subscribers to the SIM card protection service, and it is expected that even more users will be able to receive protection through this additional subscription.
SKT will also provide the 'SIM reset' solution announced on the 11th from the 12th. This solution is designed to maintain a high level of security while minimizing customer inconvenience by changing authentication information through software without replacing the SIM card and providing the same security effect.
SKT is also actively working to secure SIM card inventory. SKT plans to supply a total of 5 million SIM cards in May and 5.77 million SIM cards in June to resolve the SIM card replacement waiting problem.
An SKT official said, “Through this SIM protection service upgrade, we have prepared cyber-security measures for all customers,” and “We will continue to prioritize customer protection and quickly pursue various measures to strengthen security, such as SIM replacement.”
