Introduction of ‘Customer Assurance Package’
SK Telecom (SKT) has added a function to block illegal copy phones.
SKT has prepared a 'Customer Assurance Package' to protect customers in the wake of recent cyberattack incidents.
This measure includes upgrading the FDS (Fraud Detection System), strengthening SIM protection services, and accelerating SIM replacement, and focuses on building a multi-security system to block hacking damage at the source.
SKT has further upgraded its existing FDS (Fraud Detection System) function to prevent not only illegal SIM card duplication but also damage from illegally copied phones.
The newly applied multi-factor authentication method precisely analyzes the unique characteristics of the customer's SIM card and terminal information to block network access by pirated phones.
Park Se-jun, CEO of Tiori, who is currently serving as an advisory member of SKT’s Information Protection Innovation Special Committee, evaluated the technology by saying, “This technology structurally blocks hacking attacks based on the communication properties of SKT’s SIM cards, and its special feature is that it prevents damage even when the IMEI (Unique Equipment Identity Number) is cloned.”
This enhanced customer protection measure also includes an upgrade to the SIM protection service. The existing SIM protection service served to block hacking damage through cloned SIMs, and the new upgrade improved it to maintain security features even while roaming abroad.
Measures have also been put in place to increase the speed of SIM card replacement. Free SIM card replacement (including eSIM) has been carried out at 2,600 T World stores nationwide since the 28th of last month, and replacement work will continue by securing 5 million and 5.77 million SIM cards in May and June, respectively.
SKT is also introducing a SIM reset solution to provide security benefits by changing some authentication information without replacing the SIM card. This is an innovative service that can strengthen security while maintaining settings such as financial certificates and contact information.
An SKT official emphasized, “We have built a security net that can effectively protect customers through the ‘Customer Assurance Package’ that includes FDS advancement, SIM protection service upgrade, and SIM replacement acceleration,” and “SKT promises to take 100% responsibility for hacking damage, so customers can use the service with confidence.”
Through this measure, SKT has not had a single additional case of damage in the month since the cyber breach incident. The company plans to continue to strengthen its multi-layer security system with customer protection as its top priority.
