[Editor's Note] As demand for non-face-to-face services increases, various non-face-to-face services such as self-driving cars and autonomous delivery robots are being supplied and operated. Accordingly, various activities are being actively attempted in the field of intelligent IoT. In the midst of this, we had an interview with Jang Byeong-nam, CEO of Codeju, an intelligent IoT communication service provider, to learn about LTE Cat. M1, an LTE-based communication method for IoT devices, and how to easily build various services using AWS IoT SiteWise.

■ Please introduce the code.

Codeju is a company that provides intelligent Internet of Things communication services.

Since 2013, we have been manufacturing various communication hardware for 9 years and connecting this hardware to various cloud services through firmware and RTOS-based software to operate this hardware.

■ Please introduce what LTE Cat.M1 is.

LTE Cat.M1 (Category M1) is an LTE-based communication method created for Internet of Things devices.

It has the coverage of an LTE network, but is a low-speed communication method with a maximum transmission speed of 300 Kbps, making it suitable for creating independent IoT devices regardless of network infrastructure. It can be said to be one of the best communication methods outdoors.

■ Why is AWS Cloud Service designed with LTE Cat.M1 among various communication specifications?

First of all, LTE Cat.M1 does not require consideration of surrounding infrastructure and can be used independently in Ethernet wifi networks, etc. Therefore, configuration is easy and simple.

In addition, even if it is not a high-performance MCU, it is possible to simply connect and use 8-bit and 16-bit MCUs through commands that are already built into the SDK of LTE Cat.M1. This can be seen as helping to shorten development time.

■ What kind of services can be implemented using LTE Cat.M1 and AWS IoT SiteWise, and please explain the pros and cons?

Amazon provides AWS IoT service that allows access to the cloud.

The most common way is to build and use various services one by one through cloud services. This is done by receiving information from devices through AWS IoT and uploading components to a virtual server environment in a cloud account to build a service.

However, AWS IoT SiteWise has already prepared these processes. Using these configured services shortens the time required to open the service and makes it easy to expand the service. It is generally prepared to easily build various services such as data collection, analysis, asset tracking, and asset management that build IoT services.

■ Please explain how to build a global service without country restrictions through GlobalSim.

Cat.M1 currently has a method of using domestic SKT, KT, LGU+ or global SIM.

When using GlobalSIM and LTE-Cat.M1 together, product service is possible in the same communication environment in over 180 countries around the world through the roaming service provided by GlobalSIM.

In other words, products developed in Korea through GlobalSIM can be used to provide the same service in 180 countries where GlobalSIM roaming is permitted through the telecommunications network of that country.

I think that small and medium-sized businesses and startups with limitations will have the opportunity to advance into overseas markets as well as domestic markets through global mindset.
