Activating the launch of innovative home appliances and ensuring consumer safety
To encourage the launch of innovative home appliances using artificial intelligence (AI) and ensure consumer safety, the government has begun developing safety management guidelines for AI-based products.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's National Institute of Standards and Technology (President Lee Sang-hoon) held a seminar on the 28th to develop 'AI Application Home Appliance Safety Management Guidelines' with the participation of domestic home appliance companies such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Winia, as well as AI experts from academia and research institutes.
Artificial intelligence applications require new safety management systems.
For existing products, standards for electrical and mechanical safety have been established and safety has been confirmed before product launch.
On the other hand, AI application products may malfunction due to data corruption or hacking during use, and since updates and self-learning are performed frequently, it is difficult to guarantee safety through verification at the product launch stage alone.
Accordingly, the Korea Agency for Technology and Standards plans to prepare safety management guidelines that take into account the characteristics of artificial intelligence-applied home appliances in the first half of next year.
First, we will establish safety evaluation factors for AI-applied home appliances, such as security features to prevent risks such as data damage and hacking during product use, and algorithm validity.
In addition, it may include the responsibilities between business operators and users for product defects, the scope of information provided by suppliers to consumers, etc. That's right.
Lee Sang-hoon, head of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, said, “Product safety policies should be able to play a role in protecting consumers while supporting corporate innovation,” and added, “We will establish a safety system that promotes the launch of AI innovation products through close cooperation with experts from academia, industry, and research.”
