Korea Internet Information Society, Intelligent Internet of Things Association, Defense Innovation Technology Security Association Sign MoU
Full-scale research on AI, manned/unmanned complex systems, and digital transformation convergence The construction of a convergence network for industry-academia-research-defense technology exchange is in full swing.
On Tuesday, May 13, the Korea Internet & Security Agency (Chairman Shin Dong-kyu), the Korea Intelligent Internet of Things Association (Chairman Kim Gyeong-deok), and the Defense Innovation Technology Security Association (Chairman Kim Seung-joo) jointly held the ‘Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Signing Ceremony and Strategy Sharing Workshop on Academic Exchange and Business Cooperation’ at the Korea Science and Technology Center in Seoul.
The purpose of this agreement is to establish a foundation for mutual exchanges centered on the core areas of expertise of the three organizations, including information systems, AIoT, and defense innovation technology, and to establish a cooperative system to fully promote joint research and convergence technology commercialization for the activation of defense AI and manned-unmanned complex strategic industries.
AIoT-Defense Technology-Informatics Convergence… “Creating a Link for Future Strategic Industries” The three institutions that participated in the agreement that day agreed to cooperate based on their respective areas of expertise in ▲establishing a linkage system to activate research and technology exchanges, ▲jointly hosting domestic and international academic events and sharing information, ▲planning joint research and defense convergence projects based on AI and IoT, and ▲discovering sustainable development plans.
In particular, the Ministry of National Defense is focusing on AI-based manned and unmanned complex systems, and civilian ICs in cutting-edge defense industry fields such as robots, semiconductors, and space. It is evaluated as a signal of transformation of the digital defense ecosystem, where practical convergence between academia, industry, research, and defense occurs by grafting T technology.
Technology base and role of each association The Korean Society for Internet Information is a representative academic organization in the information industry. It holds spring and fall academic conferences and international academic conferences (APIC-IST, ICONI) every year and has an academic network of over 10,000 members that publishes the Korean journal JICS and the SCIE-level journal TIIS.
The Korea Intelligent Internet of Things Association is the center of the AIoT industry ecosystem, and with over 140 member companies including SK Telecom, it is leading various private-sector-based digital innovations such as ▲AIoT convergence services ▲human resource development and overseas expansion ▲standards and policy support.
The Defense Innovation Technology Security Association is a new civilian defense technology association established in 2023. It is establishing a foundation for defense digital transformation and civil-military cooperation through exchanges, seminars, and high-level courses on civilian ICT-based defense technologies such as ultra-large-scale AI and cybersecurity.
Will 3-party cooperation be an opportunity for ICT-based defense convergence? This signing ceremony was followed by presentations sharing each organization's key strategies and future cooperation vision, and a joint planning meeting will be held separately in the future to establish detailed cooperation plans.
Shin Dong-kyu, the president of the Korea Internet & Security Agency, said, “This agreement will further strengthen the foundation for joint research in academia and technology,” and added, “In particular, we will actively cooperate in the spread of technology in the advanced strategic industries of AI, robots, semiconductors, and space that the Ministry of National Defense is focusing on.”
Son Kyung-jong, executive vice president of the Korea Intelligent Internet of Things Association, said, “Intelligent Internet of Things technology is rapidly expanding across industries, and cooperation between industry and academia will become closer.”He expressed his gratitude.
Park Chun-seok, Secretary General of the Defense Innovation Technology Security Association, emphasized, “Defense technology can gain speed and diffusion power only when it is combined with civilian technology,” and “This three-party cooperation can become a turning point that changes the direction of innovation in defense technology.”
This collaboration among the three organizations is noteworthy in that it lowers the barriers to information and technology sharing among industry, academia, and national defense, and creates an effective collaboration model for the industrial expansion of public technology and the entry of private AIoT technology into the national defense sector. In particular, if the respective strengths of ▲informatics-based algorithm and system design ▲implementation and verification of AIoT technology ▲application of the national defense security and certification ecosystem are combined, the possibility of realizing the development of three-way linked technology among national defense, industry, and ICT is expected to increase.
