AMD held the 'AMD x86 Embedded Solution Day' at El Tower on the 10th.
At the event, Lee Hee-man, Sales Representative of AMD AECG Korea, delivered a keynote speech outlining AMD's growth strategy and the direction for expanding the x86-based embedded market.
CEO Lee Hee-man stated, “We have recorded approximately eightfold growth over the past four years, and revenue has also surpassed $10 billion as of the most recent quarter,” citing the CPU business, particularly the x86 architecture, as the background for this growth.
Since introducing the 'Zen' architecture in 2016, AMD has expanded its market share by evolving generations at intervals of about one to two years.
In particular, in the server CPU sector, it has secured a market share of approximately 44%, achieving results close to half, and is continuing its rapid growth in the Ryzen-based PC and gaming markets..
This success is extending beyond the data center and PC markets into the embedded sector.
CEO Lee Hee-man stated, “AMD’s x86 technology is being utilized in various industrial environments, including not only automobiles but also healthcare, broadcasting equipment, satellites, and industrial high-performance computing.” He added, “AMD currently has a global customer base of over 7,000 people and plans to continue its growth in the x86-based embedded CPU sector based on the experience accumulated in its existing embedded business centered on FPGAs and adaptive SoCs.”
In particular, it stated, “Based on over 40 years of experience in the FPGA-centric embedded market and a market share approaching 50%, we are currently collaborating with about 500 organizations in Korea.”
CEO Lee Hee-man cited 'environmental adaptability and long-term support' as the differentiating points of AMD's embedded business.
The explanation is that since embedded systems are exposed to various variables such as vibration, heat, and the external environment, long-term software support is key, not just hardware.
To address these demands, AMD has established an open-source-based software strategy and a long-term OS support system.
In terms of technology, embedded solutions are configured around 'EPYC' CPUs for data centers and 'Ryzen' CPUs for PCs.
The approach is to apply EPYC to fixed high-performance environments and Ryzen-based solutions to robotics or human interaction environments.
In particular, recently, emphasis has also been placed on APU architectures that combine AI functions with CPUs.
This parallelizes graphics and AI computations and is used in robotics and edge computing that require fast responsiveness even in low-power environments.With a structure suitable for vices, it is expected to become a major growth axis in the future.
