STMicroelectronics (ST) has introduced the IPS4140HQ and IPS4140HQ-1, four-channel intelligent power switches with compact size and superior performance.

This product has a small footprint of 8mm × 6mm, RDS(on) of up to 80mΩ per channel, and a wide operating range of 10.5V to 36V.

In particular, it is equipped with various protection functions and diagnostic systems to maximize safety and efficiency in industrial environments.


IPS4140HQ and IPS4140HQ-1 are suitable for various industrial applications such as PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), input/output ports of industrial PC peripherals, and numerical control machine tools.

The IPS4140HQ has a preset current limit of 0.7A and the IPS4140HQ-1 has a preset current limit of 1A, and can withstand a maximum applied voltage of 41V, further enhancing the reliability of the system.

Each channel includes temperature monitoring along with short-circuit protection, allowing individual shutdown and restart of overloaded channels.

This increases the fault tolerance of the system and simplifies automatic recovery.

Also, after the entire device is blocked, the channels are sequentially retried.It provides case overheat monitoring function to prevent excessive peak current demand.

The IPS4140HQ series features short-circuit protection, output current limiting, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), ground open protection, and input overvoltage protection, and the output voltage clamp function supports rapid demagnetization of inductive loads.

Based on ST’s VIPower™ technology, it can withstand single-pulse avalanche energy of up to 2.5J per channel.

Additionally, the I/O pins are compatible with 5 V and 3.3 V logic, and have transient voltage immunity that meets international standards such as IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD), IEC 61000-4-4 (Burst), and IEC 61000-4-5 (Surge).

The IPS4140HQ and IPS4140HQ-1 are available now in an 8mm × 6mm QFN48 package, priced starting at $2.59 in quantities of 1,000 units.

ST also offers industrial digital output expansion cards, the X-NUCLEO-DO40A1 and X-NUCLEO-DO41A1, which are compatible with STM32 Nucleo microcontroller boards and are priced at $41.65 each.
