Semikron partners with Danfoss to supply SiC MOSFETs for SMA solar systems

Rohm has embarked on a new renewable energy technology innovation based on next-generation SiC technology with high reliability and durability.

SMA Solar Technologies AG, a global leader in photovoltaic power generation and storage systems, has selected power modules from Semikron Danfoss with 2kV SiC MOSFETs from Rohm for its latest photovoltaic system, the 'Sunny Central FLEX'.

Sunny Central FLEX is a modular platform for large-scale solar power plants and next-generation storage systems, focusing on increasing the efficiency and stability of the power grid.

To this end, SMA collaborated with Semikron Danfoss to introduce high-power power modules incorporating the latest SiC technology.

ROHM's 2kV SiC MOSFET is designed for 1,500V DC links and features efficient converter circuits.

“It is optimized for solar power converters that require long life and offer high reliability in demanding environments due to its cosmic-ray resistance,” said Wolfram Harnack, President of ROHM Semiconductor GmbH.

In addition, ROHM's SiC device technology with built-in gate resistor facilitates parallel module operation, further simplifying high-power module design. He said so.

SEMIKRON Danfoss supplies SEMITRANS® 20 power modules to SMA's Sunny Central FLEX.

The module is intended for next-generation large converters supporting high power and high-speed switching operations.

“SEMITRANS® 20 is optimized for use in environments up to 1,500 V DC and will be used in solar and storage systems as well as high-power electric truck chargers and wind power converters,” said Peter Sontheimer, Senior Vice President of Semikron Danfoss.

SMA, in collaboration with Rohm, Semikron and Danfoss, is focused on maximizing the efficiency of next-generation solar and energy systems.

“By combining the innovative technologies of both companies, we have increased the performance and reliability of photovoltaic and power storage systems,” said Bernd Gessner, Product Manager at SMA. “We will continue our cooperation to ensure that Sunny Central FLEX continues to set industry standards in the future.”
