Enhancing BIM and drawing accessibility at distributed sites and strengthening security management
Southbase Construction, a New Zealand construction company, has improved the data collaboration environment at its construction sites by adopting Dropbox. This measure was taken in response to the emergence of the stable sharing and management of large-capacity design files as a key challenge, given the nature of the construction industry where distributed work is common.
On the 7th, Dropbox unveiled a case study of its support for Southbase's digital transformation. Southbase is carrying out large-scale projects across New Zealand, and approximately 85% of its total workforce works on construction sites.
Southbase has utilized BIM, drone-based AR/VR, and AI in its projects. In the Christchurch Stadium construction project, drone footage was combined with 4D BIM models to visualize construction progress, and AR technology was used to verify precision.
However, as field operations expanded, limitations emerged in existing VPN and remote desktop-based data management methods. Speed and security issues arose during the process of viewing large files, such as CAD, BIM models, and design drawings, on-site or sharing them with external partners.
Southbase transitioned to an integrated project file management system using Dropbox. This allows users to manage data previously scattered across email, chat, and third-party clouds in one place, and enables access to the latest files across PC, mobile, and web environments.
Security management has also been strengthened. It is now possible to check file accessers, sharing paths, and activity history, and access scopes for internal teams and external partners have been differentiated through permission settings. Contract procedures have also been streamlined through the introduction of electronic signatures utilizing Dropbox Sign.
File recovery and version control features were utilized to ensure data resilience. The ability to revert deleted or modified files to a previous state reduced the risk of project data loss.
Southbase has also introduced Dropbox Dash, an AI-based search platform. Dash is used to find drawings, project documents, and engineering information by integrating data from Dropbox-linked work tools.
Rem Prestige, Group IT Manager at Southbase, stated that communication errors can lead to building defects and increased costs, emphasizing the importance of an environment where distributed personnel collaborate based on the same files.
As the use of BIM, drones, and AI increases in the construction industry, the importance of data management systems is growing. This case demonstrates that the digital transformation of the AEC industry is leading to improved on-site data accessibility, security, and search efficiency.
