Canon Korea has launched a full-scale offensive on the video production market by unveiling the 'EOS R6 V,' a full-frame mirrorless camera aimed at video creators.

Canon Korea held a press conference to unveil new products at Studio 159 in COEX, Seoul on the 14th and announced the new EOS RV series product 'EOS R6 V' and the 'RF20-50mm F4 L IS USM PZ', the first full-frame RF power zoom lens.

The key point of this announcement is that the EOS R6 V is not merely a product that adds video capabilities to the existing camera lineup, but is the core model of the V series designed to target the video production environment itself.

Park Jung-woo, CEO of Canon Korea, stated that the industrial environment is rapidly changing with the transition to AI, transforming the way we work, create, and even the industrial structure.


He stated that Canon Korea would expand its integrated imaging ecosystem encompassing photography, video, hardware, and software, and explained that the EOS R6 V is a product that will broaden the scope of creators' expression by responding to the rapidly growing demand for video content.

Ko Tokura, Executive Vice President of Canon Imaging Group, also cited changes in the creative environment as the background for releasing video-specialized products.

The explanation is that the proliferation of smartphones, improved camera performance, and the development of editing apps and content sharing platforms have ushered in an era where anyone can take and share photos and videos, transforming them from simple records into means of expression that convey thoughts and emotions.

In particular, the video market is becoming more vibrant due to the evolution of smart devices and the proliferation of mirrorless cameras suitable for video shooting, and it was emphasized that selecting equipment suitable for the intended purpose is becoming important not only in large-scale production sites but also in sites requiring small-scale manpower and mobility.

Amidst these changes, the EOS R6 V occupies a position that differentiates it from the existing V series.

Canon has been expanding its video-specialized lineup by introducing three models last year, including the EOS C50 from the Cinema EOS lineup, the PowerShot V1 from the Creator V series, and the EOS R50 V.

The newly unveiled EOS R6 V was introduced as the first full-frame sensor model in the EOS RV series and the top-of-the-line model of the V series, featuring higher expressiveness and expandability.

Vice President Tokura Go explained that the EOS R6 V completes a lineup that allows users to choose according to their shooting environment and purpose, ranging from everyday vlogs to full-scale content production.

Canon, in particular, has the EOS R6 VHe clearly explained the reason for attaching the number '6' to it.

Vice President Tokura Go stated that the '6' designation was retained to signify that, just like the EOS R6 Mark III in the still image lineup, this is an iconic model that serves as the core of the lineup in the imaging field as well.

In other words, while the EOS R6 V shares the centrality of the '6' lineage with the EOS R6 Mark III, it is differentiated in that its focus is on being a core model for the video field rather than a still image lineup centered on photography.

That difference is most clearly revealed in the body design.

Unlike conventional mirrorless cameras, the EOS R6 V adopts a boxy flat body that minimizes interference when attaching accessories, and applies high video performance and shooting convenience features to a body designed for video recording.

The EOS R6 V features a compact weight of approximately 688g, an additional tripod mount for vertical shooting and a vertical shooting UI, 12 custom buttons, an additional front recording button, terminal placement to prevent interference with the swivel angle monitor, and a tally lamp to indicate the shooting status.

Manager Hwang Jong-hwan also described the differentiating feature of the EOS R6 V as a "body specialized for video."

He mentioned the boxy design without an EVF, the front recording button, and the structure designed to accommodate third-party accessories such as gimbals and microphones, stating that mobility is important in an environment where solo creators shoot while moving, holding the lens and body with both hands or using accessories such as gimbals.


This demonstrates that the EOS R6 V is not simply a mirrorless camera for photography with added video capabilities, but a product redesigned from the form factor itself to suit how video creators operate their equipment.

In terms of video performance as well, the EOS R6 V puts the specifications befitting the top-tier model of the V series front and center.

This product is equipped with a 32.5-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and a DIGIC X image engine developed in-house by Canon, and can record up to 7K 60P RAW video internally without external storage media.

It also supports high-quality 4K video based on approximately 7K oversampling, as well as 4K 120P and 2K 180P shooting without cropping the field of view.

In addition, through the 7K open gate shooting function that uses the entire sensor area with a 3:2 ratio, you can freely reframe into various aspect ratios such as horizontal, vertical, and square.

Open Gate is a representative feature that demonstrates the EOS R6 V was designed to suit the production methods of the video era.

Manager Hwang Jong-hwan explained that while general video recording primarily uses the 16:9 area rather than the entire sensor, Open Gate utilizes the entire 3:2 sensor area for recording and can extract horizontal or vertical content from a single source.

He said that in cases where both horizontal videos and vertical shorts need to be produced, such as with commissioned brand content, separate filming personnel might have been required in the past, but now productivity has increased because diverse results can be created from a single set of footage.

Long-duration shooting stability can also be presented as a video-specific feature that distinguishes the EOS R6 V from the EOS R6 Mark III.

Canon Korea is EORegarding the S R6 V, it was emphasized that it is equipped with a cooling fan to control heat and enhance long-duration shooting stability.

According to Canon Korea, the EOS R6 V can continuously shoot 4K 120P and 7K open-gate video for more than 120 minutes without heat limitations through the cooling fan, and the press kit explains that the fan speed can be adjusted in four stages: high, medium, low, and stop.

Autofocus and shooting assistance features also reflect the demands of video creators.

The EOS R6 V is equipped with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II to automatically detect and track people, animals, and vehicles, and allows you to pre-register specific people and set priorities through the Registered Person Priority function.

Focus acceleration/deceleration control, which smoothly slows down just before focusing, creates a cinematic transition that resembles a skilled director manually shifting the focus.

Focus guide, focus breathing correction, waveform monitor, zebra pattern, pulse color, shockless WB, AWB hold, and pre-video recording functions were also presented as elements that enhance operational stability in the video field.

The RF20-50mm F4 L IS USM PZ, unveiled alongside it, is a lens that further clarifies the video-focused nature of the EOS R6 V.

This lens is the first full-frame RF lens to feature a power zoom function and covers a focal length from 20mm ultra-wide to 50mm standard.

With a light weight of approximately 420g and an inner zoom design, changes in lens length and center of gravity are suppressed even during zoom operation, and the zoom speed can be finely adjusted up to 15 steps.

Manager Hwang Jong-hwan explained that when mounted on the EOS R6 V, users can focus on video recording while adjusting the zoom like a camcorder using the body's zoom lever.

However, Canon has the EOS R6 VHe emphasized that he did not give up the photo function simply because it is a video-only product.

Manager Hwang Jong-hwan explained, “Just because it is specialized for video doesn’t mean it lacks photo capabilities. That is not the case at all,” adding, “The EOS R6 V can handle not only video shooting but also the production of content thumbnails and on-site still cuts with a single camera.”

In fact, this product supports high-speed continuous shooting of up to approximately 40 frames per second based on the electronic shutter, and a pre-continuous shooting function that records up to approximately 20 frames while the shutter is half-pressed.

Ultimately, the significance of the EOS R6 V lies in the fact that it is the first full-frame V Series model equipped with higher expressiveness and expandability than the existing V Series, and that it is a model that brings the symbolism of the '6'—found in the EOS R6 Mark III—to the field of video.

While the PowerShot V1 and EOS R50 V expanded the reach of the V series for creators, the EOS R6 V establishes itself as a top-tier option capable of handling full-scale video production through a combination of a full-frame sensor, 7K open gate, a cooling system for long-duration shooting, a boxy flat body, and a power zoom lens.

Through this, Canon Korea's strategy is to expand its photo-centric camera leadership into the video production ecosystem and respond to market changes where horizontal content, vertical short-form, one-person production, and commercial shooting coexist.
