AI Server Power Contribution Expands to 31%, Power Demand Projected to 290GW by 2030

Analysis suggests that securing power is emerging as a key factor in the AI competition, as data center power demand surges due to the spread of artificial intelligence (AI).

Gartner announced on the 12th that it forecasts global data center power consumption will increase by approximately 26% in 2026 compared to the previous year.

According to Gartner, global data center power consumption is expected to increase from 447 TWh in 2025 to 565 TWh in 2026.

Electricity demand is also expected to expand from 104GW to 132GW during the same period. In the long term, it is projected to increase to the 290GW level by 2030.

This growth is attributed to the spread of generative AI and computationally intensive workloads.

AI-optimized servers have been identified as a major factor in the increase in power consumption.

Gartner predicted that AI servers will account for approximately 31% of total data center power consumption by 2026.

In addition, it was projected that the power consumption of AI servers would surpass that of conventional servers by 2027.

While power consumption of conventional servers shows only a gradual increase, AI servers are structured to exhibit rapid growth.

Gartner analyzed that the growth of AI infrastructure could be limited by power availability.

Accordingly, power supply and efficiency are emerging as key competitive factors in data center construction.

They also explained that as the possibility of power supply shortages in data centers increases, it could affect business operations.

Gartner suggested the introduction of high-efficiency cooling systems and the expansion of edge computing as response strategies to alleviate power constraints.

The analysis suggests that this necessitates improving the power efficiency of data centers and securing infrastructure scalability.
