Location error reduced by half by combining base station, Wi-Fi, and barometric pressure information
The government is introducing precision location technology to support accurate location identification in emergency rescue situations. The goal is to reduce rescue response times in complex indoor environments, such as skyscrapers.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Fire Department announced on the 23rd that they will apply precision location measurement technology to firefighting sites in the Daejeon area for the first time.
This technology calculates location by combining various information such as mobile communication base stations, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and barometric pressure. Through this, the location error has been reduced from the existing approximately 30m to 15m.
In addition, it is designed to identify the floor number of the person being rescued by providing not only simple planar location but also height information within the building.
Previously, there were limitations to rescue operations because it was difficult to ensure indoor accuracy using only GPS or base station-based location information.
The Fire Department plans to enhance accurate location identification capabilities by linking the technology to the 119 reporting system.
Currently, field testing is being conducted through the Daejeon Fire Department, and its application to the next-generation 119 integrated system is also being considered.
Based on the results of the pilot project, the government also plans to pursue measures to expand its application to other regions.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to advance technology by 2027.
In the future, the goal is to reduce the position error to approximately 10m by additionally utilizing 5G base station distance and direction information and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).
An official explained that accurate location information is a key element in disaster response.
