Responsible for ISS and Low Earth Orbit On-Device AI Optimization
Nota, a company specializing in AI model lightweighting and optimization, is expanding its on-device AI technology, built up in terrestrial edge environments, into the space sector. This is considered an attempt to expand the scope of application of edge AI optimization technology to the next level, as it involves implementing an autonomous system that processes experimental data directly on-site in a space environment where communication, power, and computing resources are extremely limited.

Nota announced on the 25th that it will participate in the 'Deep Tech Challenge Project (DCP) Ecosystem Innovation Type' organized by Space Rintec and take charge of developing on-device AI optimization technology.

This project will be implemented over four years with a maximum scale of 20 billion won, supported by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Technology Information Promotion Agency for SMEs (TIPA).

Space Rintec is a company specializing in space medicine that possesses experience in demonstrating International Space Station (ISS)-based space medicine research modules.

The goal of this project is to verify the feasibility of structural research and manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals in the ISS and low Earth orbit microgravity environments, and to develop a pharmaceutical manufacturing platform capable of autonomously operating the entire experimental process.

It is reported that microgravity environments can reduce variables such as convection, sedimentation, and buoyancy caused by gravity, making them applicable to bio and pharmaceutical research.

Nota stated that in the future, they plan to expand the application to private space stations after going through a demonstration phase of recovering and analyzing space experiment samples on Earth.

Nota is responsible for developing on-device AI technology that implements field data analysis and decision-making functions for the space experiment system in this project.

Specifically, the plan is to lighten and optimize the AI model to enable the implementation of △experimental status recognition based on video and sensor data △abnormal situation detection △natural language-based ground reporting functions.

The space environment is structured in such a way that it is difficult to transmit the entire amount of data to the ground for processing due to communication delays, power limitations, and thermal management issues, so local AINota explains that the role of is important.

Chae Myeong-su, CEO of Nota, stated, “Space is an extreme edge environment where the need for on-device AI optimization technology is most clearly revealed,” adding, “Through this project, we will strengthen our competitiveness in edge AI technology in the space sector under the vision of ‘AI Everywhere.’”
