As safety issues regarding 3D printers have recently grown, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Public Procurement Service announced on the 19th that they will push for mandatory display of precautions on 3D printers purchased through public procurement.

The Ministry of Science and ICT, after reviewing with experts, has produced a video guide and stickers with precautions for safe use, such as ➀ wearing protective gear such as masks and gloves, ➁ providing periodic ventilation for at least 5 minutes per hour from before starting work to after completion, and ➂ checking raw materials for 3D printing using the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

As a result of this measure, public procurement contractors must attach safety precaution stickers provided by the government to the 3D printers they deliver. The stickers contain precautions for safe 3D printing use and a QR code that links to an instructional video.

The Ministry of Science and ICT is currently carrying out follow-up procedures based on the results of consultations with the Public Procurement Service, and plans to apply the new system to all procurement contract products starting as early as September of this year. In addition, as part of efforts to promote safe use of 3D printing, we have collected opinions from relevant experts and produced and distributed a poster titled '10 Safety Rules for Using 3D Printing' containing safety rules that students and the general public must follow.

The safety rules suggest completing safety training, ventilating the work environment, and wearing protective gear, and in the future, with the cooperation of relevant ministries, we plan to distribute them to schools at all levels, startup support facilities, research institutes, and other institutions that operate 3D printers so that they can be installed.

In addition, the Ministry of Education will supplement the guidelines already distributed and prepare the so-called 'Educational Institution 3D Printing Lab Installation Standards and Safety Operation Guidelines' to create a safe 3D printing environment in schools. Detailed standards that fit the characteristics of each school are currently being established and are planned to be distributed to provincial offices of education and schools at all levels nationwide in the second half of this year.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor is currently conducting on-site consulting on the safety usage environment of 3D printing, including ventilation facilities and safety management systems, targeting the Ministry of Education and schools and companies that require them. The Ministry of Science and ICT is promoting safety consulting targeting corporate support centers and research institutes that install 3D printers.

'3D Printer Safety Guidelines' can be found on the 3D Imagination Portal website . ‘3D Printing Online Safety Education’ is also provided free of charge through the 3D Safety Education website .
