Convert physical servers to virtual servers, respond quickly to customer demands

Gmarket and Auction have successfully converted thousands of physical and virtual servers to an intelligent operation infrastructure based on VMware private cloud, enabling them to respond quickly to customer demands.

VMware Korea (CEO Jeon In-ho), a leader in the enterprise software sector, announced on the 15th that it has successfully completed building a private cloud infrastructure to enable Gmarket and Auction customers to quickly sell and purchase products without service delays.

Based on its long-standing experience and know-how in the virtualization industry, VMware has been providing virtual infrastructure construction and management support services to Gmarket and Auction, leading open markets that popularized domestic open market businesses and e-commerce, since 2019.

In addition, by successfully completing the recent transition of thousands of physical and virtual servers to VMware's private cloud-based intelligent operation infrastructure, Gmarket and Auction have laid the foundation for quickly responding to customer needs.

Through this work, Gmarket and Auction were able to collect various information, such as operational information, status, and performance information on virtualization infrastructure and virtual servers based on VMware's intelligent operation infrastructure, and build a dashboard with this information to detect and prevent problems that could actually affect business in advance.

These changes enable us to predict infrastructure failures in advance and respond to them quickly. This is reflected in the effective business operation performance.

In fact, by introducing this private cloud, the time it took Gmarket and Auction's development departments to provide servers in the past was shortened from several months to a few minutes, and by creating 10 to as many as 20 virtual servers on a single node, server resources can be utilized to the maximum, thereby reducing costs.

VMware aims to build a VMware Cross-Cloud environment so that Gmarket and Auction can be moved, consumed, and decommissioned without refactoring not only as on-premise workloads but also in various public clouds such as AWS, Azure, and GCP.

This allows for the maintenance of existing operational consistency while utilizing a variety of specialized services from each public cloud provider, reducing the burden on the operations department and enabling the appropriate deployment of services required for business requirements.

Kim Soon-seok, head of the Gmarket/Auction site operations office, said, “Since the end-user experience is very important in open markets, it is important to build an environment where numerous users can quickly shop on PCs and mobile devices.” He added, “Based on the intelligent operation infrastructure based on a private cloud built with VMware, the development department was able to quickly provide servers in a short period of time, enabling us to provide a very positive customer experience.”

He added, “In e-commerce services, server virtualization is most important for reducing server provision time and reducing costs by maximizing server resources.”

“We are delighted that VMware has become a strategic supporter of infrastructure construction for Gmarket and Auction’s digital journey, which popularized open market business and e-commerce in Korea,” said Jeon In-ho, President of VMware Korea.“We will go beyond the construction of this private cloud infrastructure and implement a VMware Cross-Cloud environment in the future to support the acceleration of Gmarket and Auction’s differentiated open market business performance,” he said.
