STMicroelectronics-Ocumented Collaborate on AR-3D
Goal of developing vacuum-sealed MEMS micromirrors
Bubble MEMS, environmentally friendly and suitable for vehicles

STMicroelectronics announced on the 12th that it has agreed to collaborate with MEMS mirror specialist startup OQmented in the fields of Augmented Reality (AR) and 3D sensing. Under the agreement, the two companies will develop technology and products utilizing MEMS mirror-based LBS (Laser-Beam Scanning) solutions.

ST plans to invest heavily in its MEMS design and manufacturing resources. Ocumented will industrialize and mass-produce its patented 3D glass encapsulation method, the “Bubble MEMS®” technology, for implementing vacuum-sealed MEMS micromirrors.

The bubble MEMS method reduces environmental pollution and minimizes the impact of light reflection. In addition, vacuum sealing is a key element in meeting automotive grade requirements, which significantly reduces power consumption. Vacuum-sealed MEMS mirrors enhance the performance of resonant two-axis scanners that move in both axes at the resonant frequency, and enable the implementation of ultra-compact, low-power scanning solutions. Resonant mirrors are suitable for display and 3D sensing applications in mobile devices.

Through this collaboration, the two companies plan to bring to market a variety of scanning solutions, including MEMS mirrors and drivers and controllers, and reference designs for laser beam scanning engines for a variety of applications. The two companies plan to continue to collaborate on the LBS roadmap and future technology and product development.
