Ministry of Science and ICT-Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, C-ITS Joint Working Group Formed
'24, LTE-V2X, WAVE 中 C-ITS standard confirmed The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) concluded discussions on the nationwide plan to build the next-generation intelligent transport system (C-ITS) on the 26th. In addition, a C-ITS joint working group was formed with the participation of both ministries, KETI, TTA, the Korea Expressway Corporation, and ITSK. C-ITS is a support infrastructure that enables vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-road communication to share traffic hazard information in advance at a distance longer than the vehicle sensor distance of 150-200m, allowing for a response.

The two ministries held a C-ITS joint task force launch meeting at the government complex in Sejong City and discussed the LTE-V2X demonstration plan and future joint task force operation plan. The government is promoting the construction of C-ITS on major roads nationwide starting this year in accordance with the Korean New Deal.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will review the maturity and international trends of the Wi-Fi-based WAVE technology and the mobile communication LTE-V2X technology, which are being considered as targets, in order to select the communication technology necessary for building C-ITS. Specifically, LTE-V2X will first be verified by 2022, and a pilot project to run both methods in parallel on some highways will be conducted until 2023. After 2024, it is planned to be expanded nationwide as a single standard.
In particular, the highway demonstration project will be built in parallel to respond to the volatility of the current trend and to secure the domestic automobile industry and autonomous vehicle competitiveness early, while the WAVE method will begin construction in the fourth quarter of this year. The LTE-V2X method will begin construction immediately after the expected completion of the verification process at the end of 2022. Afterwards, nationwide construction will be promoted as a single communication method by comprehensively considering the verification and demonstration project results and international trends.
Kang Do-hyun, the director of the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Information and Communication Policy Bureau, said, “We will actively support the domestic autonomous driving and vehicle communication ecosystem to advance into the global market through inter-ministerial cooperation.”
