Battery weight reduced by 101kg, but capacity reduced by only 3kWh

Formula E, which pushes the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, is back with a new look.
Formula E entered season 9 with the Mexico City race on January 14th with a new machine, gen 3.
Formula E is the world's largest and best electric vehicle race, where every decimal second counts, combining incredible performance technologies not seen on regular roads.
The third generation Formula E racing car, Gen 3, has four-wheel drive, a top speed of 320 km/h, and a maximum output of 600 kW with 250 kW electric motors at the front and 350 kW at the rear.

It is 40 km/h faster than the 2nd generation and recently It is much higher than the maximum output of 111-239kW of the released Ioniq 6.
The battery also contributed to the speed increase of gen 3.
The Formula E machine has been upgraded from Gen 2 to Gen 3, with a change in battery supplier.
Batteries for Gen 2 have been supplied by McLaren Applied Technologies and Atieva.
Starting with Gen 3 batteries, Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE) will be in charge.
WAE has dramatically reduced the weight of batteries, allowing for faster racing.
The battery weight of Gen 2, which was 385 kg, has been reduced by 101 kg to 284 kg, and the total weight of Gen 3 vehicle, including the driver, has been reduced by 60 kg compared to Gen 2 to 840 kg.
Although the battery weight has become much lighter, the battery capacity has only decreased by 3kWh to 51kWh, demonstrating technological prowess.
It has an efficiency that the energy produced through regenerative braking accounts for more than 40% of the energy used during racing.
Also, in line with the eco-friendly trend, Gen3's batteries are composed of minerals with sustainability in mind, and battery cells are reused and recycled when their lifespan ends.
Starting in the second half of this 9th season, it is expected that pit stops will be able to provide additional energy during the race through ultra-fast charging.
In Formula E, they are called Attack Charge Stops and can provide ultra-fast charging at 4kW for 30 seconds.
ABB, the title sponsor of Formula E, will also supply a mobile fast charger, the ABB Formula E Race Charger.

It can charge one vehicle at 160kW or two vehicles simultaneously at 80kWh and is designed to travel as races take place around the world.
The tire supplier has been replaced by Michelin and the iON, a tire exclusively for electric vehicles, has been designated as the official tire for Formula E.
Unlike Formula 1, Formula E does not have pit stops to change tires.
It must be durable and perform well under any temperature or humidity conditions.
Hankook Tire, which supplies tires to Formula 3, WRC Junior class, etc., uses its experience as a foundation to supply tires that can deliver the best performance in races.
At the Mexican race held on January 14th, the iON tires performed well in terms of traction, grip, and handling, and showed consistent performance.
Avalanche Andretti's Jake Dennis, winner of the first race of Season 9, said the new tires have shown better-than-expected, consistent performance.
Formula E's tires also pay close attention to environmental friendliness.
Hankook Tire said it developed the Gen3 tire with sustainability in mind, with natural rubber and recycled fibers making up 30 percent of the tire.

In addition, it is expected that the number of tires that are pointlessly discarded will be significantly reduced by the policy that tires should be recycled after a race if their wear resistance is assessed to be suitable for use in the next race.
Hankook Tire will be the title sponsor for the races held in Rome and London, including the first race of Season 9 in Mexico City, and will be with the team from the start to the end of Season 9.
Meanwhile, the Seoul Race, which was scheduled to be held in 2023 following last year, has been canceled.
The organizers reported that the area around the Seoul Olympic Stadium, where the 100th Formula E race was held in 2022, cannot be held due to construction, and that there are difficulties in creating a circuit in the Gwanghwamun area.
As a result, the Seoul race has been confirmed to be cancelled and the race will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
It is unclear whether the race cancelled this year will be held in Korea next year.
