[Editor’s Note] STMicroelectronics introduces a sensor that can be used to support TrueTone color detection and camera white balance color for screen adjustment in mobile devices such as smartphones and smartwatches. In the e4ds Webinar on September 7, ST will share the features of the VD6283 ambient light sensor, the innovation potential of the product, design resources, and development tools including software code examples. Ahead of the webinar titled 'Introduction to Ambient Light Measurement Sensors and How to Use the Evaluation Board', our magazine heard from ST Vice President Shin Jin-wook, who will be the presenter.

■ What is an ALS/Flicker sensor and why is it attracting attention?

The VD6283 (1.83 x 1.0 x 0.55mm) is the third version of ST's ambient light sensor.

The VD6283 can be used for color temperature (CCT) and illuminance (Lux) detection.

Featuring a patented architecture and high-performance photodiode design, the VD6283 can extract the flicker frequency of light and use it to improve camera performance.

In addition, light measurements are fast and accurate, making them suitable for a variety of applications.

■ What products will be introduced at the e4ds webinar on September 7th?

The sensors we will introduce today are a light sensor and a flicker detection sensor.

Using Color Filter, you can measure six Channels (Red, Green, Blue, IR, Visible, Clear) and the degree of Flickering of ambient light.

■ What are the main applications for these sensors?

It can be used to measure the ambient light intensity and automatically adjust the display brightness on a specific monitor or mobile device.

The Flicker sensor detects the flickering of ambient light and helps reduce flicker when shooting video with your camera.

■ What are the key market/industry requirements and what are the advantages of ST sensors?

In the consumer market, including mobile devices equipped with display devices, there has always been a requirement for brightness and color information.

The ST VD6283 color sensor is currently the smallest (1.83 mm²) multispectral ambient light sensor providing complete brightness and color information.

It offers excellent performance in low-light conditions and is tolerant to changes in the angle of light thanks to the hybrid color filter.

■ What are the differences between ST products and those of competitors?

It detects ambient light in the 400 nm to 1100 nm band from six channels: R, G, B, IR, Visible & Clear, using highly sensitive photodiodes.

Light Flickering can be detected even under 1 Lux conditions, especially when detecting as low as 7 mLux in the Green channel.
