ON Semiconductor Unveils New LED Lighting Controller for Dimming/Non-Dimming

ON Semiconductor has introduced two new LED lighting controller solutions, the dimmable NCL30386 and non-dimmable NCL30388, which provide market-leading options for designers of LED lighting devices, such as those used in office and industrial building applications.

Both devices are high power factor, single-stage, constant current/constant voltage primary-side regulated (PSR), pulse width modulation (PWM) controllers for flyback, buck-boost or Sepic power topologies. They operate in quasi-resonant mode to achieve efficiencies that exceed the requirements of power standards such as the EU Ecodesign, ENERGY STAR and NEMA SSL specifications.

The integrated digital power factor correction (PFC) algorithm provides excellent power factor greater than 0.95 and total harmonic distortion (THD) less than 10% over the universal input voltage range. The integrated high-voltage start-up current provides fast start-up, low standby power, and wide operating range at the output. Current and voltage are regulated via digital PSR CC/CV loop control, typically in the ±2% range, to provide highly uniform lighting brightness under all conditions.

The device is easy to use, operates over a wide V CC range of 9.2 to 26 V DC , and provides high efficiency over the entire voltage range with valley lock-out and frequency foldback. Safety features such as brown-out and overvoltage protection are also included, further simplifying design by adding the ability to detect short-circuits in the output, windings and diodes.

The NCL30386 and NCL30388 enable faster time to market by eliminating the need for many external components to complete the design, reducing bill of materials (BoM) costs and the space required to implement a complete lighting solution.

In addition, the NCL30386 offers excellent dimming capabilities, including linear or quadratic dimming curve options. The wide analog dimming range is controlled by two dedicated analog/PWM control pins, allowing precise dimming down to a minimum dimming ratio of 0.5%, with no audible noise.
