Designers can easily provide simultaneous photoplethysmography (PPG) and electrocardiography (ECG) measurement capabilities for health monitoring on battery-operated mobile devices.

The industry’s first biosensor module, the MAX86150, features built-in LEDs, photodetectors, and an ECG analog front end (AFE). It enables small, low-power designs for mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and smart speakers. Its highly accurate PPG and ECG performance enables FDA compliance.

Until now, implementing PPG and ECG measurement functions simultaneously required two biosensors, which required more board space and more power.

It was also not easy to ensure accuracy above the standard. This was especially challenging in environments that affected the sensitivity of the sensor, such as low perfusion levels or dry skin.

The MAX86150 has an excellent common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR), a measurement of noise reduction, of 136dB.

The 100mA capacity HDR (High Dynamic Range) LED driver provides superior sensitivity on various skin types.

The ECG sensor’s low impedance contacts allow for more accurate measurements even on dry skin. It operates as a dry electrode, allowing for accurate readings without the need for gels, lubricants, adhesives, or moisture pads to be applied to the body.

The MAX86150 integrates an ECG sensor and an optical PPG sensor, saving space in the same size as a standalone ECG sensor. It provides more functionality without a third electrode. It simultaneously samples PPG and ECG to provide pulse transit time (PTT) with the highest sensitivity.

This module has a low shutdown current of 0.7μA and can be shut down via software with near-zero standby current. Its low battery consumption ensures that the power rails are always powered.

The MAX86150 is available in a 22-pin optical module measuring 3.3mm x 6.6mm x 1.3mm.

According to research from Global Industry Analysts (GIA), home healthcare monitoring systems contributed to a 35% reduction in outpatient hospital visits in 2017. Users can closely monitor their health status at their fingertips with an integrated heart health monitoring system.

“Maxim’s MAX86150 demonstrates our ongoing work to create a healthier world,” said Mohammad Zarghami, executive business manager for the Industrial and Healthcare business unit at Maxim Integrated. “High-precision heart rate measurement in a small, low-power device helps consumers take better care of their health and prevent illnesses.”
